TV Tax

There was an episode of The Young Ones (British comedy) some years ago. The inspector came to see if they had a TV and a license, and they made Neil eat the TV to get rid of the evidence. Unfortunately, the cord was still hanging out of his mouth and the inspector caught them.

I know about the license fee now, but didn’t when I saw the episode, so it didn’t make any sense.

Can anyone tell me what the point of any tax is?

The British government has made a very big deal about this in recent years.  I read an article a coupe of years ago about a special van they use that has some kind of electronic-sniffing device in it.  THey drive around and sniff out illegal TVs with it.

What’s scary is, on an NPR roundtable about “corporate media,” the tax-fattened-hyenas of public broadcasting were waxinf rapturously about the BBC licence fee and how it should be used in America so public broadcasting could be more “independent.”

Years ago I read an article where a person had an inoperable TV out on the curb waiting for the garbage lorry to pick it up.

They had to pay the tax.

Apparently they’ve had detection equipment for years that can tell when the TV’s on.  So do they force themselves in sans warrent?

What really sucks is that their TV bites.

There are plenty of beaurats in America that would love to force us to buy annual licenses for TVs, radios, and computers. Just think of all that lovely money they could steal, along with increased incometaxes and nationalized healthcare- they would orgasm right on the spot!

It’s odd that something that I take for granted - that I have to pay for a TV licence - is thought strange by others. It does annoy me when I pay extra for satellite TV anyway. Why should we pay for the BBC when many people don’t watch it anyway?? I have to say though in defence of the BBC it’s good to watch TV without adverts and if we didn’t pay there’d just be loads of TV ads in the programmes to pay for it instead. I think I could cope with that for the sake of an extra 100 odd quid in my pocket each year though!!
