This is also a nail in the coffin of many small businesses that won’t be helped by tax breaks because they aren’t to the point of owing any taxes.

Any word if Conrad exempted American Samoa?

So, in practice, the minimum wage hike isn’t going to impact their (Wal-mart) businesses at all.

A hike in minimum wage will impact their business.  Maybe not to the extent as others, but Wal-Mart too will be affected.

Where/What are the tax incentives for small biz? Where can I get more info?

Troy_Pineri - 06:02pm on 02/01/2007

but Wal-Mart too will be affected.

How do you figure?

The Whistler - 06:02pm on 02/01/2007

Wal-Mart would probably be impacted when many of their low-wage shoppers suddenly find themselves without a job.

Troy, do you support the minimum wage?  Because your acknowledgment that it is bad for business leads me to believe that you don’t.

Whistler,

Wal-mart is company that buys stuff too.  The companies that they buy from will raise prices or the companies that supply the companies that Wal-mart will feel the pressure to raise prices.

Wal-Mart does not exist in a vacuum.

I do support a raise in minimum wage, but not without corporate/small biz tax cuts/incentives.  I am wondering the specifics of what passed the Senate.

I doubt many of Wal-Mart’s suppliers are paying their workers the minimum age either.

Nothing in our economy exists in a vacuum.  Everything impacts everything else.  My point was that the minimum wage hike impacts small businesses much more than it impacts Wal-Mart.

The minimum wage is essentially a tax on low-wage labor paid by those who employ low-wage workers.  It’s counter-productive.

So, in practice, the minimum wage hike isn’t going to impact their (Wal-mart) businesses at all.

Which is it?

I was first in this thread to state:

A hike in minimum wage will impact their business.  Maybe not to the extent as others, but Wal-Mart too will be affected.

I guess we are in agreement.

Troy_Pineri - 07:02pm on 02/01/2007

Troy, the impact the minimum wage hike will have on Wal-Mart will be so insignificant that my first statement holds true.

That’s why Wal-Mart is actually calling for the minimum wage hike.

Rob - 07:02pm on 02/01/2007

The folks it will impact are Wal-Mart’s smaller, mom-and-pop competitors who can’t afford to pay the wages Wal-Mart does.

That’s a very smart point.

Think there is a chance Walmart will be able to use
“small business tax cuts”?

Two words, “Family farms”.

Rangel in the House can kill this Senate bill indefinitely,
as any tax or budget is technically supposed to
originate in the House.

Stay tuned.
