Beardsley,

First, an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would create the climate for full blown war in the entire ME.  Additionally, there is new data from a NIE report (of all places) that suggest there is no credible evidence that supports a conclusion that Iran is pursuing nuclear bomb.  Reports state that Iran stopped its enrichment program in 06 and not restarted it.

A strike on Iran could set back US interests in the region of which are a great many.  There is also a much greater chance for retaliation from not only terrorists around the world but on our economic interests world wide.

Some things which it seems you havent considered, Rodney, is that Iran has a much larger population than our most recent disaster, Iraq.  Attempting to keep military operations down to a minimum would not be as easy as it was in Saddams dessert.

If you combine the three campaigns in AF, Iraq and then Iran....our military resources are going to be stretched to the limit and it will require a draft.  The draft will negatively impact how effective our military will operate.

I think it safe to say that both Hezbollah and Hamas would become much more active in their efforts against their enemies (such as Isreal and Lebanon) and set the stage for WWIII.  Not to mention that it could be likely that both of those organizations could turn their focus on us.

I happen to think that as nasty as Iran is, they are still one of our great hopes for creating a democracy in the region as much of its younger generation are more likely to be positive on US relations (at least prior to our invasion of Iraq) and promise more diplomatic relations, that could lead to more security in the ME.

We need their help in ensuring that Iraq maintains some sort of semblance.  Even though they are also part of the problem, they are also a stabilizing force whether we admit it or not.

Han,
You can’t let a country that has proven it will foment conflict on it’s neighbors, have a weapon as devasting in the long term. (radiation half life) When Quadafi did the Pam Am thing and was making noises, Reagan took out his main tent and some of his family. End of problem

I was taken in the very last round of the lottery in Vietnam. Draftees disignation were “US”, enlistees were “RA”. Uncle Sam’s...Regular Army. I can assure you from experience, the draftees fought as hard and as well as the enlistees.

As for a ME war, there’s only 3 or 4 countries with bigtime munitions and delivery platforms that would have a dog in the hunt. And they, other than perhaps Syria, know how devastating a war with long range missles, fighters and bombers would be. The rest of the countries would be like hezzbollah and humas, not really effective long range.

These people years ago used to cut off their enemies heads and play soccor with them. They are not reasonable people.

As long as the religous fanatics are in charge, I don’t believe any effective peace can be achieved. Remember they want the entire world converted to Islam. Every man, woman, and child. And it is their charge from their God to accomplish this. The only thing they understand, and will
stop them is strength.

I think Jordon and Egypt are the stabilizing forces. They have armaments, but they don’t use them. Iran and Syria are the one’s that have to be kept down. The rest of the factions have small arms and inaccurate, short range missles. And only Iran and Syria are supplying them.

That’s my opinion. Of course I could be wrong.

By the way, I voted for Bush, but would not again. However, managed properly, I think a draft would be a good idea. I met and became friends with people from walks of life I would never have know otherwise. But no draft just to start another war. There was and if you listen to the
troops, there is now a camaradarie that we don’t really have in civilian society. And we could use it. Look at
Congress, they are like animals.
