Missing Military Tributes

I sometimes think people see patriotism as a fad.  Pre-9/11, brandishing the American flag and declaring patriotism was seen as passe.  Something  redneck yokels did.  Immediately after 9/11 patriotism became cool again.  Declaring allegiance and fidelity to your country was seen as a good thing, but as 9/11 fades from our memories we are resorting to the old ways of doing things again.

Declaring your patriotism isn’t sensitive or multicultural enough for these people.  Which is sad, of course, but hardly surprising.

...that there was not one word of tribute [at the Oscars], not one breath, to our fighting men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan or to their families or their widows or orphans. There were pitifully dishonest calls for peace—as if the people we are fighting were interested in any peace for us but the peace of the grave. But not one word for the hundreds of thousands who have served and are serving, not one prayer or moment of silence for the dead and maimed.

I noticed that too, and thought it was odd. Of all the places, you’d think Hollywood would lead the way on hollow displays of patriotism.

I’ve stopped going to the Movies.

They sure lead the way on hollow displays of everything else.

Lik: Exactly. They’re willing to hold a ceremony to honor "excellence" in filmmaking, but they won’t perform the equally pointless task of holding a moment of silence.
