An apology had better not be coming from North Dakota - my ancestors didn’t get here until 1900-1910. They never partook in such activities so I don’t have white guilt about the issue, however if they had participated in such acts, it would not be my place to apologize on their behalf as that’s something they would already be paying for in the afterlife.

I’ve said this before - I have no need to apologize, nor do I want anyone apologizing on my behalf. I have never owned a slave, nor have any of my family ever been slave holders.
I had an ancestor who died from wounds he recieved at the Battle of Shilo while in the 18th Illinois Infantry. And I have the documentation to prove it.
Obviously he was fighting against slavery - not for it. So....why do I need someone to apologize for me?
This is absurd.

Rob, I kind of understand in a way. BUT I don’t know if an apology is what is really needed though. I mean, I am very sorry that this happened to those people. I also am extremely sorry about lots of historical events that happened. The people that this happened to are most likely dead and gone. What we need to do is make sure this never happens again. Many of our ancestors fought to free slaves. I think what needs to happen is people need to get over the idea that because they are a certain color, that they are privy to special treatment. The last I checked slavery is no more and the people are not running through the streets calling for it.

Not only are people such as Sheila Jackson Lee, Lynn Woolsey, Charles Rangel, Maurice Hinchey, and Dennis Kucinich apologizing for slavery, they are either lying or ignorant of simple history to boot:
Whereas slavery in America resembled no other form of involuntary servitude known in history, as Africans were captured and sold at auction like inanimate objects or animals;
If only that were true.

More Europeans were brought to [North] Africa as slaves than were black slaves brought to the new world.

Where’s the apology from them?

you know what, this surly was a big deal. I think what needs to happen is not the forgetting but the looking upon as an history lessen. As in a race saying this is what happened to us. Yeah slavery sucked, but it should be viewed as a lesson for humanity. And surely it was, and not both blacks and whites… unfortunatly not all, know the difficulties associated with it and would not seek to force someone into such circumstances. So if aliens say stopped by 2morrow. We would know not to try to enslave them. And if they had a similar experience on their planet, they would know not to try to enslave us. Life is about lessens, not living in the past.
They’re posturing for reparations.
