Man, that’s too bad. Not only was he a great sportscaster...does anyone remember that he was the sportscaster voice on the song “Paradise By The Dash Board Lights” on Meatloaf’s classic Bat Out Of Hell?

Genuinely col stuff.

Rob, I had just read about this earlier and the first thing I thought was ... how many sports hero’s deserve the positive write-up like Scooter. The “Holy Cow” guy is an example of what real heroes are made of. Like you said he was in the shadow of extraordinary players yet he made himself a class act star.
It saddens me to see all the true heroes leaving but at least they leave behind a noble legacy for current players to live up to.

I heard an interview he did, where he related his tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937. The manager, Casey Stengel, told him he was too small:

“Go get a shoeshine box!”

He said it made him mad and just added to his determination to succeed.
