In 2001 (or maybe 2002, I’ve forgotten), New Hampshire had exactly as many murders committed with knives as with guns (11 each). That was not an unusual year. We also have very few laws governing gun ownership, but as in your case, our culture is mainly small town and country living - so guns are a normal, everyday thing.
