Keep in mind that in those days, nobody smiled for a picture because the exposure time was too long--your face would shift and your mouth would end up as a blur. Keep in mind as well that having a few more pounds was considered attractive in those days. So the thought of giving these ladies a kiss probably wasn’t as repulsive as you’d think today.
Also, keep in mind that in those days, you didn’t just kiss any lady that came down the street; what these ladies are suggesting in this picture is that teetotaling wives would refuse affection to their husbands if they came home smelling of demon rum. Might have been a fairly effective ad.

BB,
Ugly is ugly… no matter what era.

LOL.. BB!
Sorry, but a smile is not going to do enough justice to those faces to make any difference. As for the teetotaling point.. that I understand, but still as Bat1 said, ugly is just that ... Uuuuugly!
As for the weight issue, I’m afraid those women could be skinny as a bean stake and still be quite homely. Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that they look like they could, and very well would, whoop all our asses.

Bike Bubba, Do you have your beer googles on?

I was going to dispute its historical accuracy. Looked like a fake to me.
Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes clean to the bone!

If you look carefully at each of these women, it should be readily apparent why their husbands drink. What is not so apparent is how those husbands ever got THAT desperate in the first place!

If you look long enough, you might get thirsty.

OK, OK… let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps, they’re all very unphotogenic. Being one myself, I can understand that. Getting so many photogenic challenged women together at one time is a bit slim, but hey… just maybe right?
Now, if it was all an act to look dog @$$ ugly, then DANG… give them boards a well deserving oscar .. acadamy award… nobel ugly prize, cause they done good!

A truly weapons grade bit of understatement there, Ms. Anna!

I was wrong. It’s a still from an Edison short.
The way I heard it, was
