i agree completely. i tend to disagree with quite a few calls the umpires make, but the vast majority of the time, those calls are consistently bad; i.e., a pitch a few inches off the corner of the plate will be called a strike on everyone. every umpire seems to have a slightly different strike zone… once you get that figured out, you’re good to go.

The other night I was watching the ASTROS. The Ump made such a bad call, I thought he had to be cross- eyed. OR pehaps betting on the game that night???

Yeah, looking as a 95+ mph fastball with part of your vision blocked by the catcher is so easy. Trying to judge whether a breaking curve of slider hit any part of the plate is equally difficult. If someone was really interested in improving strike/ball calls, they would incorporate computerized video into the game.

Getting pissed about bad calls (or good calls that go against your team) is one of the best parts about sports in general.
Computers would ruin that.

Good point. If the crowd couldn’t vent their hate and fustration on the refs where would they put it - on the players or the guy selling 5 dollar popcorn?

From a statistical standpoint, the results are likely inconclusive. The article doesn’t even mention the theoretical margin of error.
Stating that the umpires are favoring their own race is about as logical as stating that pitchers are 1% more likely to throw good pitches if the guy standing behind the plate is of the same race.
Bad Science. Not something that a respectable news outlet should even publish. If anything, it shows that there isn’t some sort of major racist conspiracy among pitchers. But that wouldn’t make headlines, would it?
