Zarqawi In Cahoots With Members Of Iraq’s New Government?

That's what one Iraqi politician is charging...

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had the phone numbers of senior Iraqi officials stored in his cell phone, according to an Iraqi legislator.

Waiel Abdul-Latif, a member of former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's party, said Monday that authorities found the numbers after al-Zarqawi, leader of al Qaeda in Iraq, was killed in a U.S. air strike on June 7.

Abdul-Latif did not give names of the officials. But he said they included ministry employees and members of parliament.

He called for an investigation, saying Iraqis "cannot have one hand with the government and another with the terrorists."

It could be little more than a political stunt. Just some politician trying to get an edge by accusing his enemies of being in cahoots with the terrorists (which should tell us a thing or two about who is winning the hearts and minds of the Iraqis). But that's just speculation on my part. Plus, if this were a political ploy you'd think this guy would have named names.

Regardless, an investigation is certainly warranted.

If these claims turn out to be true I think that's probably good news for our efforts in Iraq. For one thing it gets these terror sympathizers out of the government, and for another thing it displays how Iraq's new leadership isn't interested in cooperating or dealing with the terrorists...again telling us a thing or two about just who is winning the war.
