Zarqawi Dead?

Lets hope so:

The Elaph Arab media website reported on Sunday that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of the al-Qaida in Iraq terror group, may have been killed in Iraq on Sunday afternoon when eight terrorists blew themselves up in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.
The unconfirmed report claimed that the explosions occurred while coalition forces surrounded the house in which al-Zarqawi was hiding. American and Iraqi forces are looking into the report.

This isn’t the first time Zarqawi’s death/capture has been reported, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Keep your fingers crossed.
Update:
In The Bullpen has links up to articles claiming that eight high-ranking al Qaeda people killed themselves in Mosul today after U.S. forces layed seige to a building they were in.
Iraqi blogger Omar is also hearing unconfirmed reports of Zarqawi’s death.
Update:
Looks like he is probably still alive.

Oh, of itself his death won’t end anything. But the death of one of the Jihadis’ heros surly must have the effect of demoralizing them–which has to be helpful to us.

Zarqawi dead or alive, I wouldn’t get too excited over the possibilities of peace. As has been seen in the Palestine -Israel conflict, every time the Israels off one of the terrorists leaders, another rises to assume the leaders role. I think that too often we forget that we are fighting an terrorist ideology which much more difficult to combat than a few individual terrorists.

No question that Zarqawi needs to be gone like Saddam needed to be gone and like Assad in Syria, the head man in Iran, the leader in North Korea and all other tyrants need to be gone. Offing all these guys in itself does not stabilize the affected areas for the long term. That’s why the withdrawal of our forces and influence in any foreseeable time frame is not advisable. Good point Doc. Same thing applies for bin Laden. Terrorism does not begin and end with any of these guys. It is an ideology that must be defeated, not any one man or group of men.

Still, it’d be nice to see Zarqawi in a body bag.
