You Readers Have Crappy Taste In Music

Something has been bugging me for a while.

Down on the right sidebar there’s a “Now Playing” section that shows what song/artist I’m currently listening to on my computer.  Clicking on the album art or song title takes you to the Amazon.com product page for the album.  After that, if you buy anything from Amazon, I get a small percentage for referring them the traffic because I’m an Amazon associate.  It doesn’t generate much revenue, but every few months it does allow me to get an Amazon gift card for some books or movies or whatever.

Anyway, since I put the Now Playing section in a few weeks ago there have been about a half dozen of you who have bought music after clicking through to Amazon (among some books and other things).  I know this because I get a listing of what people ordered after clicking through from my site.  What is scary is that the half dozen of you who bought the music got Justin Timberlake’s new album, and just last night one of you bought a Barbara Streisand album.

Barbara Streisand.

I am, quite frankly, totally aghast at my readers’ poor choice in music.  Seriously.  Those of you who ordered this stuff need to come forward, admit you have a problem, and dedicate yourselves to getting help.

What, no Dean Martin?  Bunch of music slobs!

It was you who bought the Barbara Streisand album, wasn’t it?

Man, how could you be so cruel to say that?  Her singing reminds me of a cat fight.

Fortunately for moi, I live in North Dakota.

2h9, that’s how I get all of music too.  Actually, what most people buy when they click through to Amazon from here is books and movies.  I just couldn’t believe the music selections though.

Gotta defend Babs, music-wise anyway. Her voice is incredible. Her politics suck, but her voice is great. If she’d jusr shut up and sing, all would be well. There, got that off my chest.

There can be, however, no defense for listening to anything by Justin Timberlake. Someone must have had a weak moment.

My music taste has pretty much settled.  So when I coverted to MP3’s I mostly had what I wanted.

Now though, when I think of a song I liked back in High School or from a movie I can buy the single.

This works great for me.

So you’re the one!

Now the first step on the road to recovery is admitting that you have a problem…

Yeah, Justin Timberfake is just the latest in a long line of fakers and posers. As for books, I go to Albris more than anyplace else online. I much prefer to go through the stacks in several of my favorite used book stores. One down in Silver Springs love for me to come in, I sort by category and alphabeticaly. After 4 hours I have their shelfs straightened out and bought $100 dollars worth of books. I am not big on new releases, Wifey ordered Ray Suarez’s The Holy Vote, I’ll let y’all know what I thing of it when I’m down.

Crappy taste in music?  Phooey!

Up now, Taj Mahal, Elvin Bishop, Boz Scaggs and Duane Allman, to be followed by Lonnie Mack and Stevie Ray Vaughn, and then two versions of “Winelight” (Grover Wahsington, Jr. and Paul Brown), Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” from the Black and White concert, and some ZZ Top.

Crappy taste, my ass, yankee boy!

"Layla”, Led Zeppelin 4, Moody Blues (Every Good Boy Deserves Favor in particular), Dark Side of the Moon, Madman Across the Water, anything by Skynard, Uriah Heep’s Demons and Wizards, Jesus Christ Superstar (the original studio version), Bat Out Of Hell....the list goes on. Some of my favorite stuff. I have over 3,000 vinyl albums in my collection.

Rob and Whistler - I didn’t say I liked Streisand. I like her voice. I stand duly chastised.

Hotel,

Can’t pull it up on this computer. I’ll check on another when I get home.

I’ve been collecting for years. Got some pretty cool stuff. Over 3,000 vinyl albums, and about 1,000 45’s. (remember those?) Lot of unique and rare stuff. It’s a hobby and a passion.

My dad’s had people ask if they can bring their kids over to see how a record player works.

So my first two ‘45’s were “Hot Rod Lincoln” and Three Dog Night “Black and White”.

I now have them both on my Ipod.

It’s an amazing world.

Of course a ‘45’ works a lot better as a frisbee than an MP3 file.

The last CD I bought (which was about two hours ago), and what I’m currently listening to is The 78th Fraser Highlanders Pipe Band.  It’s rocking my socks.

I didn’t buy it off of your Amazon link though.

Paulie, do they play Here Come The Campbells on that album, or Gary Owen? I have to listen to the pipes alone, Wifey can’t stand them and Boy don’t get it, yet.

Since we’re talking music, have any of you heard of Old Crow Medicine Show?  Great stuff.  If anyone here is a fan of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band you’d probably be a fan of OCMS too.

So gathering by this thread, anytime I’m going to buy something from Amazon I should click over from your site.

That way you make even greater blogger revenues and I get the same deal.

Hey that’s sounds so lucrative for you I can just drop the measly support I’ve done for your blog.

Last ime I cleaned and re-arranged my office, I found a bottle in the back of a desk drawer that said “Old Crow” on the label.

I’m not sure it was any better for the extra ageing, and it didn’t have the smooth compleixty of the Woodford Reserve I favor, but then it didn’t have that faint hint of Prestone and old copper that can still be found within a couple hours drive of Atlanta either.

Well, my share of the revenue is a pittance, but yes it is a good way to support the site if you want to do that.  Just click on the link under now playing and then shop away.  Anything you buy I’ll get a referral fee.

2H9, I’m afraid they don’t play either of those songs.  The 78th Fraser’s album that I’m listening to is from the 1987 World Pipe Band Championships.  Why did I buy it?  Well, I like bagpipes… and, now that I’m out of the Army, I have time for hobbies.  Tomorrow I am taking my first bagpipe lesson.  I’m getting pumped up and motivated for the lesson!

Yeah, sometimes it defaults to Barnes and Noble if the album can’t be found on Amazon.

Isn’t this some sort of privacy violation? What are you going to do with this information?  Torture us by playing military or religious music?  That was my inner Streisand speaking.  smile

Arn’t you biting, or is that hitting, a gift horse in the mouth?
Relax, I’m being sarcastic.

Seriously though, I wish people like Barbara Streisand and other ‘good’ singers would stop dabbling in politics because it really makes me want to stop listening to them.  Same with actors like Sean Penn, George Clooney, that West Wing guy, etc.  It’s difficult to separate their politics from their singing and acting.

Although Streisand is as bad as Penn (politically speaking), I will listen to Streisand’s music, but I refuse to watch anything with Sean Penn in it.  Maybe it’s because I get lost in the music and don’t have to look at the singer.

Then there’s ‘Ahhnold’ - somehow he, like Ronald Reagan, has managed to cross the political barrier and attract voters across party lines.
