You Can Never Have Too Many Bullets

A friend emailed me this story. I thought it was an urban legend, but it turned out to be true.

LAKELAND, Fla.  —  Officers fired 110 rounds of ammunition at the man suspected of killing a sheriff’s deputy, killing the suspect, according to an autopsy released by the sheriff’s office.

Angilo Freeland — who was suspected of fatally shooting the deputy after being pulled over for speeding Thursday — was hit 68 times by the SWAT team members’ shots, the examination released Saturday showed.

He also was suspected of wounding a deputy and killing a police dog.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said he was not concerned by the number of shots fired.

“You have to understand, he had already shot and killed a deputy, he had already shot and killed a K-9 and he shot and injured another deputy,” Judd said by phone Saturday. “Quite frankly, we weren’t taking any chances.”

“I suspect the only reason 110 rounds was all that was fired was that’s all the ammunition they had,” Judd said.

Damn right, if you have a valid reason to shoot, then make darn well sure that you shoot enough.  I have to wonder about the round count though.  I bring more than that to family events.  smile

86’d with 68 out of 110 rounds—what a way to go.

No one who is not on a police force, putting their lives on the line, or in our US military should say anything about the number of bullets used to kill a felon or an enemy combatant.

Socialist always try to control through supply.

If govt control of the economy were the way to go, the Soviet Union would be the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

Thanks to Obama, America remains the only country where it is illegal to drill our own oil!

That should be: “Socialists…”

Note that the number of officers involved is not given.  If there were 10 members on the team…that’s 11 rounds each.  How much time does it take to squeeze off that many rounds?

Makes for a drastically different mental picture than one guy firing 110 shots at the perp.

Since it appears that this was a Swat type action you’d think that there were quite a few cops in on the party.

You’ve probably got it though, the probably each emptied a magazine and saw that the threat had significantly diminished.

I’m going with “didn’t reload.”  Don’t SWAT teams generally carry high capacity magazines and such?

Personally, I’m glad that lethal shots are hard to make, even for members of SWAT teams.  Perhaps the team’s review would ask questions about whether 110 rounds fired endangered someone else needlessly, but overall it’s a good thing that some of these rounds may have missed.
