Yet Another Democrat Calls For The Fairness Doctrine

Remember when the left was telling us that a resurrected Fairness Doctrine was just a figment of fevered, conspiracy-minded right wing minds? Well I guess we right wingers weren’t so crazy, because Democrat after Democrat is coming out in favor of bringing back the Fairness Doctrine.
Rep. Maurice Hinchey is just the latest, joining Senators Debbie Stabenow and Tom Harkin.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — More and more Democrats in Congress are calling for action that Republicans warn could muzzle right-wing talk radio.
Representative Maurice Hinchey, a Democrat from New York is the latest to say he wants to bring back the “Fairness Doctrine,” a federal regulation scrapped in 1987 that would require broadcasters to present opposing views on public issues.
“I think the Fairness Doctrine should be reinstated,” Hinchey told CNNRadio. Hinchey says he could make it part of a bill he plans to introduce later this year overhauling radio and t-v ownership laws.

I don’t think there’s any doubt that the Democrats are going to try and bring back the Fairness Doctrine.

dfwpike… are you really that naive!!??

No matter what they call it, the intent is to make it unattractive for broadcasters…

I’m not naive about the intent. I just don’t see the “legislation” being called the “Fairness Doctrine”. It’ll be called something else but will have the same effect.

Communism is coming alive in the Democratic party.

how are the liberals going to justify the opening 2 more full time, non-cable tv stations dedicated to conservative news to the american tax payer?

I am an avid Republican-hater. I fully 100% support Obama.

But, I am an AMERICAN first, and what these Democratic insane morons are proposing is a complete and absolute atrocity.

Thomas Jefferson said if the choice was between a free press and a free country, he’d choose the free press: “The basis of our government being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them.”
    Thomas Jefferson
    1787

ANY member of Congress who supports suppressing free speech on the radio is a threat to our nation and MUST be removed from office.

Good for you but I wonder how you will react when your idol Obama supports the congressional action to silence conservative radio?. He can veto any congressional legislation but I’ll bet you that he won’t.

These fascist democrats don’t realize that the Fairness Doctrine can be used both ways. We could demand and receive equal time on CBS, NBC, ABC, NPR, CNN, MSNBC…

Every single daily news cast would have to be represented with an alternate view. We have plenty of bloggers who would volunteer to monitor and represent our point of view on the air. This could be a stimulus bill that employs conservatives because the network TV stations are all union and would have to pay union scale. When I worked in TV news every news story that I shot that made network paid me $500 and I wasn’t union. In essence our conservative counterpoints could be profitable at the expense of the liberal Fairness Doctrine.

The time has come to play hard ball with these commies. When the pendulum swings the other way and democrats are the minority again they will regret this.

  • docdave

Of course big media which they already control would be exempt. The Dems are so transparent with their attempts to silence the opposition.

Why not just have one government controlled media entity and call it Pravda?

The U.S. congressman in the photo is Maurice Hinchey of the Hudson Valley area of NY State. He was my Rep (Ha Ha) when I lived in NY. One time at one of his public meetings I sttod to ask him a question–as the people there realized I was asking him about some touchy legislation of his–I received boos and hisses–Maurice did not intervene. He did not have to answer any hard questions.

No matter what they call it, the intent is to make it unattractive for broadcasters [who will be burdened with the requirement to carry low-rating liberal blather] to carry highly successful – and profitable – conservative talk radio.

Uproar? What uproar? From conservatives? Probably. But, from the rest of America there will be silent aquiescence. Leftists will, of course, rejoice.

Too bad the democrats will never propose a bill supporting free speech!

I don’t see this stuff going through, when and if it is enacted it will be tied up in the courts for a very long time. Also, this is another over step that will defeat the dems. This stimulus mess will have a very though toll on the left leaning dems in conservative districts (blue dogs). Mark my words the leftard can spew all they want but it is going to have lasting effects on them.

  • dfwpike

They won’t try to reinstate the “Fairness Doctrine” because it will create too much of an uproar. They’ll go about it through different means (liberals are sly). It’ll be called something else and will probably fly below the radar.

If they could get it repealed they would keep Obama for life.

Hunter: That may be true today, but I think the bloom will be off that rose shortly. Sooner or later, the One is going to have to actually do something!
After four years of the Obama economy and Barry not filling their tank or paying their mortgage, I think the country will be open to…change!

Proof, we can hope that Obama will go the way of Carter but its not likely. The media is leftist and thoroughly enamoured with Obama. They will continue to cover for him as they did during the campaign. It will take some huge screw up and a reform of the media that has become merely a propaganda arm of the democrat party.

You can’t be both. These Democrats are just doing Obama’s bidding, just like they’ve done on the spendulus package. He is author of that bill and he is author of bringing back the Fairness Doctrine (or media control doctrine). He tried during his campaign to squash voices of descent through his “truth squad” prosecutors. Now that he’s in power, you can bet the First Amendment is in extreme danger and much like Chavez, he will not tolerate for long, these voices of descent that would cause anyone to question his administration. Oh by the way, the Second Amendment to the Constitution is in danger as well, so you better stock up on guns and ammunition.

Mickey, you are wrong about this. These news media are available on cable, which is considered private. Radio is on airwaves, which are in the public domain and under FCC regulation. Isn’t that just great? The left could have it both ways. They already have the alphabet news as their propaganda arm and they hope to suppress conservative news media through the government which they control.

The left is going after the 1st and 2nd amendments, but its the 22nd amendment that concerns me more. If they could get it repealed they would keep Obama for life. These people long for a King, and think they have found one. All you have to do is watch a little public television, a leftist controlled media, and you can see their fascination with the British Monarchy, and royalty in general. They believe in social classes and that they are the elite.
