Women In Combat Plan Nixed

BBC – Republicans in the US Congress have ditched a flat ban on women in combat.
The House Armed Services Committee watered down proposals which would stop women from serving in support teams which back up front-line combat troops.
Advocates of the plan say the women get too close to the fighting, but the US army, facing problems with recruitment, was opposed to the move.
Senior officers said they would have had to pull 22,000 female soldiers out of their jobs to replace them with men.
They also warned of damage to morale, with the army’s vice-chief of staff saying in a letter that the plan “would cause confusion in the ranks”.

On an earlier post about this proposal a female commenter and Iraq war veteran laid out the case against this rule change:

I believe Congress needs to take a step back and rethink this. Define “combat” for me, please? I was stationed in Iraq, as a squadron commander of a unit that is traditionally provides combat service support. Until Iraq, such a unit would have been “behind the lines.” Instead, I found myself in the midst of rocket & mortar fire every day as we did our job of resupplying the force, repairing vehicles, refueling aircraft, moving cargo on/off airplanes, etc. Don’t believe our military or political leaders ever imagined that my type of unit would experience combat. But we did! So”if we take women out of these units, what’s left for them to do in the military? Are we going to tell the Air Force to take their women out of the fighter jets they’re flying? Are more of you guys ready to volunteer to join the military and fill the job vacancies that will be created if women are not allowed to serve in this capacity?

To be honest with you, I don’t know why women who are capable of passing the same training requirements as men aren’t allowed to engage in full combat in our military.

The trick is that they're not passing the same training requirements. For example, physical requirements for women are far lower than those for men.

Make the PT requirements the same, and the combat issue will go away.

Good point, Robert. I agree fully.

There was only one dissenting vote, and I think it's for good reason.

I think it comes down to this for me… As long as there is no need (recruitment wise) for women to be on the front lines, it should be men only. Even if you disagree, you have to admit that there are more potential things that can go wrong by mixed sexes in combat. You have the whole "men want to protect women" thing, the "men don't like to be bossed around by women" thing, and the idea that a group of guys can become VERY close and work very efficiently (very necessary in today's wars) when they are together all the time… throw a women into the loop and the dynamic changes totally (for the worse in my opinion).

I think it's not something that is necessary and thus should be kept the way it is.

I 100% support women in combat arms. Heck, Israel does it, and they insist on the same standards for women as men.

I'm not convinced by the traditional arguments against it:

    "men want to protect women"
Yeah, men want to protect men as well. Sometimes that comes across as incredible bravery, and sometimes as incredible stupidity.

"men don't like to be bossed around by women"
Well, nobody really likes to be bossed around by anyone else. But leadership, good leadership that is, isn't bossing. Women already "boss around" men in non-combat arms units, and often do it quite well (and sometimes not so well… just like the men).

As for "a group of guys can become VERY close and work very efficiently…when they are together all the time"
Well, so can women and men. As I said, they already do in the non-combat arms units.

"…throw a women into the loop and the dynamic changes totally (for the worse in my opinion)."
Sure it changes, but for the worse? I'd be interested to know how so.

    Seth~

You say you're not convinced by the arguements against women on the front lines, so you default that it is acceptable? You're talking about changing the dynamic of the front lines in warfare dramatically and you better be damned sure that you are aren't changing it for the worse, or that you're changing it for the better, before you make that change.

Like I said, there is no NEED for it, so why make the change when the arguement is very much up for debate?

Israel does not let women in front line combat they found out that it just doesn't If women go through the same train with the men you will find out how many will drop out …i myself was a grunt in nam and i can tell you one thing any women who wants that better have the head checked for sure,
