William F. Buckley, Jr. R.I.P.

William F. Buckley, Jr.
1925-2008

National Review Online is reporting that William F. Buckley, Jr. has passed away.

With the passing of Ronald Reagan, Milton Friedman and now Buckley, conservatism has lost its trio of icons.

Condolences to his family, his colleagues and lovers of individual liberty everywhere.

He was a great man. The world was richer for having Bill Buckley in it.

A huge loss for America.  Mr. Buckley’s intellectual legacy is without equal in American history.

I was fortunate enough to sit through one of his talks when he was a guest speaker for the company I work for.
He was a true gentleman and scholar.

Mickey on February 27, 2008 at 10:09 am

Before there was Ronald Reagan, or George Will, Buckley was about it, him and Goldwater.

He was conservatism.

Ken McCracken on February 27, 2008 at 10:58 am

I have no end of sincere respect for Buckley, his intellect and contributions to America and I say R.I.P. Bill, but it occurs to me that conservatism is nothing but a wanton whore. Buckley, Goldwater, Reagan and several others are claimed to be fathers of modern conservatism, so conservatism is immoral at its very core, not having one father but many! The reason I mention this is because this accounts for why there is no clear definition of conservatism to which even a large number of conservatives would agree, it is a vapor in the wind, an illusion and its adherents not only seem lacking in compassion, but often willing to kill and destroy their own that their version of conservatism may prevail over all others. The many conservatives commenting here attest to that fact, if another conservative dares move even slightly from anothers strict conservative beliefs, others will join with them like rapid dogs tearing the wavering disciple apart and thus making it clear, adhere or die. But, adhere to what? There is no clear conservative message as its many, many fathers can attest.

Rest in peace Bill, but you leave a damn mess behind you about what conservatism really means and disciples that are fuilled with hate for one another and greater hate for liberals as human beings. Long live the king (Bill) and I fear death to the conservative movement!

In keeping silent about evil, in burying it deep within us, so that it appears nowhere on the surface, we are implanting it, and it will rise up a thousandfold in the future.

Up until about the age of 15 I lived on a small patch of farmland in south-east California. No-one in my family or circle of acquaintences had ever graduated from college.

Sometime around 15 I went to live with my mom and stepfather, who had cable TV. I was flipping betwween channels and happened to come across two programs. One was Steve Allen’s Meeting of the Minds, the other was William F. Buckley’s Firing Line.

The impression that Allen and Buckley made on me gave me the desire to go to college, and rise above my childhood environment.

Mr. Buckley, God bless you for that.

For whatever reason I became hooked on these shows.

Buckley championed the Constitution, liberty, economic freedom, and individual responsibility.

I can only assume that anticonservative is opposed to all of those things.

Compare this to the laughably thin charge on another thread:

Why do you (conservatives) hate liberals so much?

There’s something wrong with someone who applauds the death of someone with a differing viewpoint.

This is the fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives. When a prominent liberal dies, Malkin, Hannity, et. al. post about it and keep the family in their prayers. Liberals rejoice at the deaths of people they disagree with.

Another sign that the left is morally bankrupt.

It’s all political bullshit. Liberals (and Robert108) lie and spin and twist and obscure and distract and cheat to protect their guys and hurt the opposing team. It’s like wrestling. They distract the ref while their team mate hits you with a chair. There’s no rule they won’t break, no law they won’t skirt, no crime they won’t forgive as long as they can win.

Yeah, it’s better to blame terrorist attacks on gay people, makes a lot of sense.

At least Buckley favored drug legalization, so he can’t be all that bad, for an anti-semite.

Although gay people tend to vote Democrat, so it’s not COMPLETELY unfair.

My ass. I guess you\‘ve never seen Fox New\‘s scathing obituary of the great American author Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Turn a blind eye and ignore the facts, that is the Conservative way.

As for myself, I hold no qualms to the fact that I hope William F.uckly Jr\‘s death was slow and hideously painful as he deserved far worse than mere death. I applaud his death and wish for more Conservative scumbags to die.

AntiConservative on February 27, 2008 at 03:48 pm

Anticonservative, on every post I have seen that lets us give condolences to someone who has passed away you write comments that you are glad the person has died and that you hope the individual burns in hell.

Grow up.  You claim that it’s conservatives who do it but every piece of evidence I have seen points to you, lik, and dannyboy.  And, yes you are as pathetic as those other two and I am right to lump you in with them.  If is looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.

This is just as pathetic as revelling in the hypothetical shooting death of a Democratic candidate

It’s never good when someone dies…especially when that person at least contributes, intelligently, to the political debate.

I don’t agree with much of anything he said, but if I could paraphrase what another poster on a much more left-leaning forum put it, I would rather listen to WFB Jr. read the phone book for 4 hours than endure 5 minutes of Rush/Hannity/Coulter.

How can I hope he burns in hell when hell doesnt exist? Now thats just wacky superstition. What I can do is hope he had a horrible and painful death and hope that others like him follow suit. But that doesn\‘t matter now because hes dead. All his potential pain, joy, suffering and elation has come to an inevitable end never to be experienced again.

What a crappy day.

Lonely Federalist on February 27, 2008 at 06:19 pm

anticonserve:  To wish anyone a slow, painful death is simply contemptable. There can only be two possible reasons for you making such a tasteless comment:

1.  Shock value: You are personally tittilated by the idea of offending those who admired Buckley.

2.  You are - in fact - tasteless and contemptable.

A third possibility presents itself: You are both.

Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other vews.
