Will Biden Withdraw From The Race?

Apparently there’s some buzz about Joe Biden possibly resigning from the Presidential race (or Obama giving him the boot from his ticket, depending on how you see it). Is that what’s going to happen?
I don’t think so.
For one, in the wake of Palin’s ascension into the national eye, Obama’s down. But the one thing you don’t do when you’re down is admit that you’re down. Biden leaving Obama’s ticket would do just that.
For another, who in the world would Obama bring onto the ticket to give him back his edge? Hillary Clinton? After Palin that’d certainly look contrived. As would the choice of any other female politician. So who else is there? I can’t think of anyone Obama could pick for VP that would excite Democrats and independents enough to both overcome Biden’s departure and counter Palin’s popularity in any significant way.
So, for better or worse, I think Obama’s stuck with Biden for the duration.
He’d have been better off picking someone else from the get-go.

health …will undoubtedly be the spin.

Well, he did have those two aneurysms…and the strain of campaigning, blah, blah, blah…and the thought of debating Sarah Palin making him pee his pants…

I can’t imagine Biden withdrawing. BUT with Obama he “changes” his mind quite a lot. Who knows? I reeeeeally can’t imagine Hillary accepting his sloppy seconds. IF you will pardon the expression? BUT, who knows with the Dems?

    1870 till 1920 déjà vu

African Americans were first permitted to vote in 1870.
American women were first permitted to vote in 1920.
That’s 50 years that for one reason or another that African Americans were essentially treated with more dignity and respect than women. Think of it, they received more respect than the wives, daughters, and sisters did from their own husbands, fathers, and brothers. It took 50 years for the male voters to eventually see the cruel and unforgivable lack of fairness in the status of women between the sad years of 1870 and 1920. And, it was THE WOMEN, the suffragettes, who forced the issue–and championed their own defense of their Right to vote. The men eventually acceded to their entreaties for justice, but it was the women who brought the issue to the fore.

Now, in 2008, we as a nation of voters–and especially women–are again confronted by two choices: Do we again slight women by voting to favor an African American for the prestigious job of President of the United States merely because he is personable and has excellent oratorical abilities? And do we then exclude a wonderfully personable and charming woman who also possesses outstanding oratorical abilities? What, ultimately, are our aspirations?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is a groundbreaking election. It is precedent setting just as was the Fifteenth Amendment of 1870, and the Nineteenth Amendment of 1920. It is impossible to imagine women back in those sorrowful years…shaking their heads in utter disbelief at their second class status….

Men need to respect women more, but in truth, women also, need to respect themselves more. Once again it is women who are called upon to stand up for themselves and claim their Right to high executive office. Just as freedom needs to be defended (and that means fought for) so does breaking through the ‘glass ceiling!’

Women in particular should review their choices carefully, and ask: Who would best represent my interests? Which candidate is most likely to lend a sympathetic ear to the difficulties and challenges that I must personally face? Which of these two candidates would be most accessible, most likely to take my phone call, most likely to read my letter with heartfelt understanding and concern?

Ladies: The time has again come to defend your interests. Vote to achieve greater respect. Vote your heart. Vote for what feels right. Vote to advance your status in America. You have the power if you use it.

This has got to be the dumbest group of morons I have ever seen.

In exactly what part of the world is anyone with a brain talking about Biden withdrawing from the race for VP???

    This is complete BS.

I don’t care how it’s spun, if Biden leaves the ticket, it will be seen by all as an admission of just how STRONG Palin makes the McCain/Palin ticket and the move will be seen, no matter what the spin, as an act of desperation on part of the Obama campaign. There is no way that Biden can leave and actually help the campaign, it will only make Obama look weak and flailing!

If Biden would leave the ticket it would be due to some illness.

For what it’s worth, my guess is that Biden is in the race for the duration. Along these lines, you might be interested in the post on the National Review corner that quotes from a recent email that Obama’s campaign manager sent to the Obama Campaign promising among other things to “respond with speed and ferocity to John McCain’s attacks.” The reason I bring it up is that the memo says that Joe Biden “will be integral part” of their new plans. The link is here:

    LOL.

Unfair. I read that one when I was drinking and choked.

I thought the crowd was supposed to be ON the bus, or AROUND the bus… not UNDER it!

And haven’t we been told all along that Obama’s campaign was based on judgment and not experience? The last time a far Left Democrat nominee ditched his initial VP choice, the GOP won 49 states.

  • A little help please

Does anyone know the process that would have to be undertaken if this happens? Would they have to go back to a convention and have the delegates re-nominate the ticket? Or is it just as simple as Biden stepping down and Obama nominating someone new?

I am definitely ignorant as to the process. Any clarification would be appreciated. :)

  • texastom

If Obama was stupid enough to think that changing VP choice was a sign of strengh, there is only one person he could pick to replace Biden. I nominate Nancy Pelosi. No there’s a ticket!!

  • Scott T Ault

If Biden withdraws, as I have claimed since Tuesday, it will be due to “family” reasons. This would give the Obama campaign the high moral ground, in their opinion, that they have been trying to claim since Palin was chosen. As far as Hillary goes, she might be bitter, but she still wants the Presidency and the VP position may be her last chance.

  • kbiel

If Biden bows out, he should just shoot the moon and pick William Ayers or Bernadine Dohrn.

  • Bozobama

If Biden would leave the ticket it would be due to some illness.

Or injuries he recieves in a bus accident.

Bide will be gone, then he will select Oprah

for better or worse, I think Obama’s stuck with Biden for the duration.

Still, if he switched veeps it wouldn’t surprise me! With the MSM on hand to spin any flip flops, the party that resurrected Frank Lautenberg after it was too late to substitute Senatorial candidates in New Jersey, could well see its only hope for victory in a Hail Mary substitution!

  • Spartacus

texastom isn’t far off. If Biden steps down it will reflect poorly on the type of decisions Obama makes. If Obama throws Biden under the bus for a more popular choice (Hillary?), the pandering will be blatantly obvious, possibly viewed as condescending by many Hillary supporters. Not to mention meaning he’s willing to sacrifice Delawares electoral votes. For Obama any such move now would be a very risky.

  • http://www.willisms.com/ Zsa Zsa

I think Obama should get Al Sharpton OR jesse Jackson to be is veep!

  • http://forums.kikizo.com/ Eddie_the_Hated

Obama wouldn’t. He knows how close the race was, and how much McCain’s already gained on him. He can’t afford another big publicity debacle.

  • kaintock

If he did leave ticket for health reasons, what would he do with his Senatorial obligations?

Also, why would Hillary want to lose face. Palin is on a roll. I have been monitoring the Hillaryclinton forums and most are hell-bent on not supporting Obama even if.

Finally, politically speaking, Hillary would be at a severe disadvantage hopping on this late in the game. She herself is probably impressed with Palin and doesn’t quite know how to weigh her options. Analysis by paraylisis…a Clinton trademark.

But above all, for all those delegates and other Dems who came out to push O over the finish line, Hill owes them nothing.

If Biden would leave the ticket it would be due to some illness.

    Palinitis

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

That’s a good question. I’m not sure what the procedure is, but whatever it is it’d be a formality.

I can’t imagine the Democrats wanting to make the situation even worse by nailing Obama on some point of order.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

If Biden would leave the ticket it would be due to some illness.

If Biden did leave the ticket, and I don’t think he will, health (and/or family) will undoubtedly be the spin.
