Why You Send Your Kids To College

Around the world nations like India have universities running at full capacity to crank out scientists, mathematicians and engineers. Here in America, our kids go to college to attend Hot Sex Week.

The University of Northern Colorado housing department director threw cold water — but just a splash — on a steamy series of sex-oriented talks and games this week at Harrison Hall.
The nixing of Saturday’s sex-toy slumber party, which was advertised as being for girls only, takes some of the momentum out of “A Week of Hot Sex,” as the five-part (now four) series is billed on signs in the residence hall. It started Monday night in the Harrison lobby with a 30-minute session of massage techniques led by a certified therapist.
Joshua Roth, a freshman who lives in Harrison, attended the massage session along with about 30 other students. He planned to go to other events, including an oral sex workshop today and condom bingo on Sunday.
“I think it’s awesome,” Roth said. “I think it’s a great way to promote safe, fun and consensual sex.”
He said he learned “cool” and “safe” techniques at Monday’s session. “It’s just a very honest educational program.”

I’m no prude. I could probably enjoy a few “Hot Sex Week” seminars as much as the next guy. But it’s become clear to me that we’ve let the “college experience” morph from one of goal-orientated career advancement to a simple expansion of adolescence. Kids don’t go off to college to learn their trade and become adults, they go off to college to put off the responsibilities of the real world for a few years longer.

And in the “have your cake and eat it too” world of the university, faculty simultaneously bitch about and enable it.

    Rob,

I recently witnessed a successful USC grad advise a high school student to go to college for this very reason. It was said that growing up and taking responsibility lasts for the rest of your life so put it off as long as you can… because it is a lot of work wrought with difficulties.

Well if this trend picks up, they definitely should create a more developed curriculum for it. I personally wouldn’t want to take a class called “Vibrators 101″ but hey, that’s just me. So instead of calling teachers’ assistants ‘TA’, I think for these courses, T&A would suit them better…

Used to be that a place to learn a trade was called a “trade school,” not a college or university. But that said, it’s even more appalling that the university has become a mere trade school for the oldest trade, apparently.

Coming from a college dropout, this means a lot.

    sex-toy slumber party

This could be an interesting nitch business. It sure beats selling Tupper Wear. Do the universities offer adjunct faculty positions for this?

Geeze, ‘Euthanasia Up to Age 12′ Dave, what’s the matter? Wake up on the wrong side of the bed, or what?

I thought you were past the attack the messenger fallacy. Guess not. Stay in school bucko. You might just learn one day why it’s not a good argument.

Guess I didn’t manage to put off the realities of the real world as long as I wanted to.
