Why We Won’t Get Meaningful Health Care Reform

Because despite protestations to the contrary, “we” don’t actually want it.

Those of us (guilty) who have been scarfing down 99 cent double cheeseburgers but not getting out to exercise don’t want to risk actually paying for our chronic care.  We will, of course, but we like that cost to be hidden.

Read the whole thing.

We’d be better off if those costs weren’t hidden.  If they were right in front of our faces, and coming directly out of our wallets and purses, we’d be a lot more likely to not only make better personal health decisions but also make the sort of market decisions that keep costs down in other industries.  Such as seeking out cheaper, but still adequate, care.  Making do without unnecessary treatments.  That sort of thing.  And once we started making those decisions, health care providers would have a lot of incentive to keep prices lower.

Just a thought:  the next time you are going in to the clinic or hospital for a procedure or test, ask the provider a simple question.  “How much will this cost?  May I pay for this myself, and will you give me a bill before I leave?” Be prepared for the blank stare that will come at you, like you just dropped from another planet.  Just think about taking your auto in to the shop and they will tell you that the cost/price will be determined at some later time, but you will be obligated up front to pay whatever that may be.  Hmmmmm
