Why Unions Support Illegal Immigration

As the debate over illegal immigration has raged in this country some of the staunches opponents to border security and deportation have been union advocates. Time and again union spokespeople have ridiculed attempts to crack down on illegal immigration as “marginalizing” the illegal immigrant population, but what I’ve always been left wondering why unions are taking this position.
Cheap illegal immigrant labor drives down wages for the jobs they take and allows business owners to bypass labor laws many unions have fought for. You wouldn’t think this would be something unions would be happy about, right? Well, unions have an ulterior motives in all this.
You see, union enrollment has been declining for years. This is due to a number of factors. Chief among them, I believe, is the prosperity America has achieved. Workers in this country are, for the most part, happy. The government closely monitors work conditions and with unemployment at pretty much full-employment for over a decade now wages are pretty much satisfactory. Of course, it isn’t perfect (what ever is?) and there people in this country who aren’t satisfied with their jobs, but by and large the need for powerful labor unions to ensure workplace safety and decent wages has passed.
This will derided as heresy by the pro-union types who read this, but it is true and the declining enrollment rates and influence of labor unions proves it. Which is exactly why the unions want want illegal immigrants in this country. The unions need exploited workers to represent in order for them to remain relevant in our modern economy, and they see the millions who enter this country illegally looking for work each year as fitting the bill.
If the unions can use their political influence to negotiate legal status for illegal immigrants in this country then they can set about organizing them for the collection of the dues that keep organizations like the AFL-CIO flush with cash and, by extension, political influence.
So the next time you hear some union advocate waxing poeting about the “plight of undocumented workers in America” just ignore it. They don’t care about the workers, they care about keeping their organization flush with cash.

2h9:  My specialty is harpooning sacred cows, not stealing thunder, so I apologize.  I did see some figures a few years back that some 40% of overall union members are Republicans, so their leadership doesn’t represent them at all politically.  This was in the context of use of union dues for exclusively Dem activities, I believe.  Not much in the MSM on that scandal, though.

Thanks, Clint. I saw it when you first posted it, also had a friend email me a scan, then I deleted it before I burned a copy. In a hurry, you know the deal.

I’d best summarize this "immigrant" movement as "Brown is the new Black™."

Organizations like the NAACP are publicly supporting them (although they’re privately worrying about someone usurping their place at the table) and the unions want those votes.

Then ya get the Democrats using these protests as recruiting rallies:

Everybody wants a piece of that pie. Some want to bring back the sixties, some want to capitalize on potential new voters, the only people who don’t gain by this are hard working Americans who live by the rules we’ve set for ourselves.

Don’t forget that unions are not bipartisan politically.  They are solidly in the Dem camp, and thus can satisfy that agenda as well.  They will have lots of uneducated members from socialist countries, which are perfect candidates to vote Dem.

r108, you done stole my thunder. Been having ongoing discussion about this with several union members, and they are pissed as hell that their union leadership and Dem politicians are pushing amnesty plans of any kind.

    Whistler,

I work at a factory that has the UAW. I fall in the 40% voting Republican. I quit the union (right to work state) because I got fed up with my dues going to support Democrats. I don’t know if I agree that 60% are lefty. I’d guess maybe 25%-30%, while the rest either don’t care or are ignorant of the issues and just follow the union leadership like sheep. When you actually discuss issues with many of them, you find out they are more conservative than they even thought. The problem is, the unions scare them into voting Democrat. Each month I try to nab a copy of the union newsletter, and it generally is nothing but bashing Bush, Republicans, and the evil big business (that just happens to be providing them with jobs). Oh, yeah, it’s fun being a conservative in a union shop! ;-)

as a former union organizer ousted for my stand against the pro-amnesty and UNI GLOBAL UNION groups now heading American labor,i can tell you that these leaders are not advocating for American workers but for their replacements.

(Forgot I couldn’t post an image up there.  Go to wizbangblog.com and you’ll see the Democrat recruitment flyer they’re handing out at the Texas rallies).

Once again you have an example off the elites of a group working against the rank and file of the same group.

Union leadership is 100% politicaly left while their membership is only 60% lefty.   Union leadership at the same time is working for illegal immigration which lowers wage rates fro their members.

As a long time East coast union member, I am appalled at the existence of the UFCW. The once great unions and its leaders who fought for the rights of American workers have diminished to the extent of their existence.
UFCW would rather fight for a job for an illegal alien over a U.S. citizen worker is repugnant.
I hope their leadership is federally indicted for all federal statutes covering violating immigration law and its criminal statutes
They are loosing the fight over illegal immigration, their membership is dwindling, and their existence is limited.
People are demanding congressional hearings into their involvement at meat-packing plants, suppliers, etc….
When it’s done I hope they RICO them into bankruptcy!
