Why Obama’s Foreign Policy Isn’t Working

Despite the fact that America had nothing to do with the coup, despite the fact that the White House took specific action to try and stop the coup, Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez still blamed America for the coup.
And that even after Obama engaged in an unprecedented level of friendliness and diplomacy with Chavez at a South American summit.
The same thing has happened in Iran. Despite Obama’s unwillingness to swiftly condemn even the beating and murder of protesters in Iran’s streets, despite his refusal to outright reject the results of Iran’s sham election, the Iranian has still sought to blame America for what is happening in their country.
So why is America still the bad guy even after Obama’s attempts at open-armed diplomacy and reticence in criticizing these regimes? Because it doesn’t really matter what America does. It has never really mattered. For tyrants and dictators in places like Venezuela and Iran, America is the bad guy not because we’re actually the bad guy but because they need us to be the bad guy.
Tyrants throughout history have always needed a great common enemy to serve as a crutch for their regimes. Hitler had the Jews, who he blamed for Germany’s economic suffering and social strife. Stalin had endless stories about how capitalist saboteurs were wrecking his 5 year plans. And for a couple of generations of dictators throughout the world, America has served as the great enemy. The “Great Satan.” The “Yanquis.”
It’s not usually the truth (I’ll not pretend as though America’s record on foreign policy is without blemish) but it is good politics. After all, why should any of these despots take credit for what’s happening in their countries when it’s so much easier to manipulate their subjects into hating some great, mostly anonymous other?
That’s getting more difficult to do in the information age, but the first things most of these regimes do – from Chavez to the Mullahs in Iran – is start controlling the media.

“Why Obama’s Foreign Policy Isn’t Working”

Actually it is working exactly as Barri said it would, making America appear weak, ineffectual, and effiminate. Good job, Barri!

Oh yes he does, Obama’s policy is to always blame America firts! Just like ‘Ogo Chavez.

Appearing weak isn’t helping our foreign relations either.

Obama wants a new world war? hmmm…gotta admit, I had not considered that possibility. Obama the insane nihilist?

nightmare scenario 108…pray your are wrong, fear you might be closer to the truth than ANY want to acknowledge.

When we retreat, they advance. Obama is in full retreat mode from the terrorist leaders.

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Petraeus Last Best Hope

This administration’s foreign policy is doomed to fail because of one historical fact in the relations of humanity that is as true today as it was when tribes bumped into to each other on the same coveted turf: THE WEAK WILL GET EATEN ALIVE.

Our kid president naively thinks the world has somehow evolved beyond tribalism. But the fact is as a species, we are barely outta the trees. And as nations all seek to advance their own agenda and are not interested in “the common good”, Obama’s appeals for everyone to just get along are the subject of laughter all over the world,

Obama will fail horribly because he lives a fantasy. COLLECTIVISM is a non starter in human relations and history has confirmed this over and over again. It’s personal freedom that is the great motivator and inspiration of all human advancement.

Why is WORLD HISTORY not seriously taught in our schools anymore at any level? Is the story not PC enough? Not enough gay/black/hispanic heroes to fill in the gaps? OUR IGNORANCE of even recent 20th century history is killing US right now. It’s why the Ayatollahs continue on the merry way to having a nuke when we should KNOW from a study of the late 1930′s that appeasing these new Nazis will not save US.

”Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: ‘Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided.’ We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.” GWB 5/15/08

It wasn’t a coup. The Honduras Supreme Court ordered their president out of office, and when he refrained from obeying their order, the Supreme court had the military remove him from office.

    Honduras Defends Its Democracy

Here’s another thought: From his point of view, Obama’s foreign policy is working.

Obama wants a new world war? hmmm…gotta admit, I had not considered that possibility. Obama the insane nihilist?

nightmare scenario 108…pray your are wrong, fear you might be closer to the truth than ANY want to acknowledge.

I think that he is just plain stupid, and easily led. I don’t know what’s scarier, our idiot president, or the power hungry sociopath who was the other option for a Democrat president.

Why Obama’s Foreign Policy Isn’t Working

Heck that is all you would have had to day, pretty profound stuff, it’s just not working, even the Blame Bush crap, and appologizing isn’t going to work.

  • Grunt

Obama assumes that these terrorist organizations and totalitarian regimes will behave rationally if we simply reason with them. His naivety is dangerous.

Why Obama’s Foreign Policy Isn’t Working

The reason it isn’t working is because Obama doesn’t have a foreign policy.

  • robert108

Grunt: Yes, the fantasy of the “reasonable terrorist”, the “reasonable dictator” and the “reasonable islamofascist”.

The sad thing is that right now, people over the world are starting to do it for themselves, starting to rebel against socialism, Islamic Supremacism, and other -isms all on their own and the USA under Barack Obama is basically telling them, no you can’t have freedom and if you succeed at your revolts, we won’t have your back and we’d rather have your tyrants in power.

That’s the message we’ve sent to the Iranian people in the last month, that’s the message we’re sending to South America, and that’s the only message Barack Obama believes in, not because he believes in it intellectually, but because he made a choice of position to take. That position was that the USA and the west and democracy and capitalism are wrong and always the villain and driven by insecurity and the egomaniacal fanaticism that comes with it he has to stick to it at all costs, or at least as long as he cynically calculates it will take the masses to forget his previous position.

By then, it will be far too late as we will have sorely offended those people overseas who wanted our help, wanted us to stand for something, and we spat in their faces. They will be then at odds with the remnants of the regimes they removed or at least became on parity with, and they will not have us and the rest of the west as allies and will be going it alone.

Barack Obama is setting back the advancement of representative democracy and civilization in general in the simple act of being wrong, staying wrong and refusing to deal with it like a child. Liberalism is a mindset gone wrong, a psychologically disturbed and emotionally wracked hodge-podge of pseudo philosophies with no proper rationale and driven in the end by one thing: obsession with the self.

Of course, Barack Obama’s narcissism should be enough of a tip-off to get that but despite decades of deconstruction of the liberal mindset, people still give them the benefit of the doubt and assign a prior that liberalism is at least equal to conservatism and any other set of ideas without any judgment of whether those ways have proper self-consistency and whether they do whatever can be judged as good to the human endeavor.

Sadly, I don’t hold much hope for Obama and the country having any awakening. He’s less than six full calendar months into his presidency and has forty-two months ahead.

I told you that this man would make Carter look like Reagan and he’s already outdone Carter for betrayal of America’s allies and cozying up to America’s avowed enemies in just that six months. Never mind the economic and legal and social systems right here at home he has led the charge by the left to savagely rewrite.

The question for me is, at what point will America wake to what they’ve done, and when they do, what will they do?
