But what if, the gov’t or insurance companies don’t cover it? Or, if they do cover the cost to a certain amount can the rich offer the donor more to be considered before a poorer patient?
I think a donor program makes sense, but a lot of issues need to be addressed first.
Um, technically, you should be free to donate ONE of your kidneys, Rob. :^) (two would kill you)
I’m with Anna for the most part. There are troubling concerns I’ve seen where people don’t actually get consent, or wait for death, before “harvesting” organs. We need to get our heads on straight this way.
It should also be noted that for the most part, the failure of many organs (heart, lung, liver) is self-inflicted via lifestyle choices. Make the price of a new heart, say, $100 k or so paid by the recipient, and maybe it would get peoples’ attention.
My kidney is available for 1 million.
I don’t even care if Big Brother says that it is illegal. If you’ve got a million and need a kidney, you can have mine.
Anything lower than a million and I’m saving it for a family member who may need one in the future.

I thought about that, and it seems to me that one should be free to give one’s life for another.
When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.
