Why Is The Governor Of New Mexico Facilitating Hostage Negotiations Between Colombia And Venezuela?

Just curious.  I mean, I know he used to be an ambassador and has some experience with this sort of thing, but did the citizens of New Mexico really elect Bill Richardson to do this sort of thing?

Richardson, who was a U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and has helped release Americans held in Sudan, Iraq, North Korea and Cuba, was asked by the hostages’ families to help seek their release. His mother is Mexican and he speaks fluent Spanish.

Which administration whiz kid should be doing this , John Bolton, Condi?

Poodle, it’s not the Gov. of New Mexico’s job to represent America to foreign nations.  As a North Dakotan, I certainly didn’t vote for the Gov. of New Mexico to go down and represent me to Chavez’s regime.

The purpose of government shouldn’t be to do good, but simply to refrain from doing evil.

The gov’t of the US has done nothing for the hostages.

Richardson is representing the families.

AS a citizen of New Mexico - the longer he is out of our state the better - when he’s here we have to put up with his crap…...

Wait, lemme get this straight….

Richardson (pretty much the only candidate worth a damn on the Dem’s side) is doing good…and we’re slamming him for it?

As a North Dakotan, I certainly didn’t vote for the Gov. of New Mexico

Yea, you didn’t. Regardless, what is the beef here? Richardson is using his sway to get Chavez to help secure the release of US hostages. Sounds like a win to me.

It’s all political bullshit. Liberals (and Robert108) lie and spin and twist and obscure and distract and cheat to protect their guys and hurt the opposing team. It’s like wrestling. They distract the ref while their team mate hits you with a chair. There’s no rule they won’t break, no law they won’t skirt, no crime they won’t forgive as long as they can win.

I suspect the reason is, that all the business of New Mexico has been concluded and there are no new issues on the horizon for the foreseeable future and he has become restless and bored.

No, seriously.

Because he can. Can’t say the same thing about you though.

WOOF,

Why not check the Constitution to see which government official(s) are charged with handling foreign affairs?  That’s what its there for!

ellinas,

Even for you, and at this late house, this is an unusually gratuitous comment.  And as an insult, it is lame, childish, and silly.

Maybe he’s trying to upstage Jimmah Carter.  e, I guess you approve of Carters antics too.

One of the most important talents for success in politics is the ability to make utter nonsense sound not only plausible but inspiring. Barack Obama has that talent. We will be lucky if we escape the catastrophes into which other countries have been led by leaders with that same charismatic talent.

The reason that Richardson is “facilitating” the presumed hostage negotiations is to strengthen his position as Obama’s first choice for VP by adding so foreign policy heft to Obama’s minimalist resume.  The “heft” Richardson brings to the table (and leaves with) quite obviously, is not merely rhetorical.

If Richardson did not have it in him (the ability, and trust) he would not be able to negotiate. People outside the USA apparently view him as someone to be trusted.
Bat one you have tried to hit me below the belt and as is usual your cheap shot was just that: A harmless cheap shot.

Bat One. Last time I checked our Constitution, I found no prohibition whatsoever about a governor, any governor, and/or private citizen mediating between two (or one hunderd for that matter) foreign countries and attempting to secure the release of hostages.

ellinas on April 28, 2008 at 06:35 pm

Bat one [sic] you have tried to hit me below the belt and as is usual your cheap shot was just that: A harmless cheap shot.

ellinas,

I do so appreciate irony… even when, as here from you, it is painfully unintentional.  Obviously, someone who writes this,

Because he can. Can’t say the same thing about you though.

is hardly in a position to be whining about “cheap shots”.  Besides, if my comment was indeed a “harmless cheap shot”, why on earth did you bother remarking on it?  Hmmm?

As for Richardson and the Constitution, I know this is probably difficult for you, what with no pictures to go by, but if you read the entire thread real carefully, and perhaps a bit more slowly, you’ll see that my answer was to WOOF’s rhetorical question about administration officials.  And as it happens, the Constitution does have something to say about the conduct of the nation’s foreign affairs, and, by golly, there’s an entire U. S. Department of State which answers to the President, specifically tasked with carrying out his policies.

Imagine that?!
