Why Aren’t Democrats Upset About Hotels “Price Gouging” For Obama’s Inauguration?

With Obama’s inauguration impending, and with tens of thousands of people planning to travel to Washington DC for it, hotel owners are raising their prices. Which, when the oil industry does it, is something that has Democrats screaming “price gouging” and “windfall profits tax.”
So, whither the outrage liberals?

Hotels in the Washington D.C. area, even ones pretty far out of the city, are charging incredibly high rates for the Obama inauguration. Rooms are going for anywhere in the hundreds of dollars (in the really “cheap” hotels) to the thousands in others.
Now, Nancy Pelosi and her Democratic buddies have a history of arbitrarily deciding that certain profits are “windfall profits” that are just “too high” and therefore need to be taxed more. Not to mention their long-standing war against so-called “price gouging” by gas stations and grocery stores (a war that I’ve rejected as economically ignorant).
So Where are they now? If oil profits are “windfall profits,” why don’t we hear the Democrats whine about the hotels that are hosting their constituents for such high prices? What happened to their opposition to “price gouging?”

Personally, I don’t have a problem with hotel rates in DC going up. I mean, demand for lodging in DC is certainly going to be up those days, so why shouldn’t hotels exercise a little supply and demand?
Liberals clearly don’t have a problem with it either. They’re only concerned about such things when they can make some political hay out of demonizing certain companies.

The price of oil has taken a nosedive.

    Light Crude (NYM)
    January 09 ($US per bbl.) 43.75 +2.94 43.75 43.75 40.81 12/8 10:07am

Someone needs to get out more.

Don’t give them any ideas, Rob. In April of 1980, Congress enacted the “windfall profit” tax on the oil companies. About 2/3rds of the domestically produced oil in 1985 was subject to the tax.

It’s only a matter of time before they spread such economic ignorance to other industries.

Why Aren’t Democrats Upset About Hotels “Price Gouging” For Obama’s Inauguration?

It’s all about outcomes. Taxing “windfall” profits from oil companies wrecks the economy (good) and punishing “price gouging” makes those who were willing to pay more for scarce resources dependent upon the government for those resources (good). Punishing the hotels in DC for “price gouging” will allow more riff-raff to join the party and crowd the fat-cat donors (bad).

thank goodness conservatives NEVER do this!!

The hotels pay a windfall tax just through increased revenue. I would bet my last dollar that the hotels in DC already pay a higher tax rate than do oil companies. On the contrary, the oil companies get subsidies I’m sure the hotels don’t get.

Plus, I’ve yet to see oil companies subjected to a windfalls tax.

Still no definition of “windfall profit” from dinothefakehomo. Imagine that!

I’m all for “price gouging” when it is Democrats paying the bill.

Yes sir, wealthy democrats paying through the nose to pay tribute to their fellow wealthy president elect. No more shady real estate
deals from questionable donors for Obama. No sir. He is one of the true elites now. His flock gave him $230 million dollars to purchase an election via class war fare, empty rhetoric and lots of advertising to capitalist run media outlets. And best of all he now has $30 million dollars that belongs to himself. Plus when he retires from office he will demand no less than Bill Clintons million dollar speaking fee per venue.

Yeah baby, dino tell me about your Utopian fantacy of wealth distribution and Obama one more time. :)

    sucker
