Why Is Heidi Heitkamp Attacking A Privately-Owned Business?

The Hill has a run-down of the latest finger-pointing and accusations in North Dakota’s Senate race, and I think it draws an interesting contrast.

Of late, Republicans have taken to pointing out Heidi Heitkamp’s support from a law firm dedicated to anti-fracking activism (something first reported here on SAB some time ago). This is a serious issue for Heitkamp, who has framed herself as friendly to fossil fuels and someone who will stand up to the Democrats (sometimes it seems Heitkamp forgets she is a Democrats) on the issue in Washington DC.

For her part, Heitkamp has attacked Berg for ties to Goldmark Property Management, a company that has sometimes gotten bad marks from customers. The Berg campaign has offered a sometimes muddled response (even I was face-palming last week over Berg’s response to Heitkamp’s attacks), but setting that aside for a moment, GPM has insisted that Berg has no ownership interest in them and has no say over their management, and the Heitkamp campaign has offered nothing to really undermine this assertion. And you have to marvel at Heitkamp’s willingness to trash the reputation of a private company to get at her opponent.

While Berg and Republicans are focusing on Heitkamp’s track record, and the make-up of her base of support, Heitkamp is smearing the record of a long-established business that, by many accounts, does a fine job of providing rental services in the Fargo-Moorhead area (among others).

That’s telling. It speaks to the Heitkamp campaign running out of issues, just as Berg and Republicans really begin to dig into Heitkamp’s record.

Update: Democrats are promising more details about Berg’s connections to Goldmark later today.
