Who Is In Charge Of Foreign Policy, The President Or The New York Times?

Because I get the feeling that the folks at the New York Times think they’re in charge.

That publication has published yet another classified document, this one written by National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley and detailing a lack of confidence in Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki.

At least, that’s the Times’ characterization of the memo.  A full reading of the document (text available here) leaves one with the impression that the memo is more constructive criticism than anything else, which means this wouldn’t be the first time the Times has mischaracterized the contents of a classified government document for the public.

Anyway, it now appears as though the release of this document has caused the President to delay a meeting with Prime Minister al-Maliki in Jordan today:

AMMAN, Jordan - President Bush’s high-profile meeting with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Wednesday was canceled in a stunning turn of events after disclosure of U.S. doubts about the Iraqi leader’s capabilities and a political boycott in Baghdad protesting his attendance.

Instead of two days of talks, Bush and al-Maliki will have breakfast and a single meeting followed by a news conference on Thursday morning, the White House said.

The abrupt cancellation was an almost unheard-of development in the high-level diplomatic circles of a U.S. president, a king and a prime minister. There was confusion — and conflicting explanations — about what happened.

This makes me angry.

Regardless of your opinion about the President - love him, hate him or ambivalent towards him - there is no arguing with the fact that he has been elected to set our foreign policy.  He is over in the middle east right now trying to advance our foreign policy and fix some of the problems in the middle east, and here at home the New York Times is printing illegally leaked memos and mischaracterizing their content in a blatant attempt to undermine him.

That’s the only way to look at this.  We have a partisan American news outlet actively seeking to undermine the foreign policy moves of a President elected by the people.  They’ve disrupted a high-level meeting, undermined our relationship with an important figure in Iraq and made our President look like a fool in a region where America can hardly afford to look foolish.

It’s disgusting, and it needs to stop.  I wouldn’t care if it was Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter over in Jordan right now, the Times had no business publishing that memo.

Somebody needs to go to jail for this, but sadly nothing will probably happen.  There might be some noises about an investigation, but the media will refuse to cover it (because the only leak investigations they like are the ones that hurt Bush/Republicans, see: Valerie Plame) and soon everyone but the few political pundits and junkies who follow this stuff religiously will have forgotten about it.

don’t be too easy on the White House. This could have been an intentional leak by the White House.  If it isn’t, then it leakege would suggest a significant level of incompentence within the White House.  ..I think the former is more likely .....

aNONOMISLY on November 29, 2006 at 09:09 pm

There’s that word incompetence again.  I suppose the White House forgot to turn on their mind control device, because that’s the only way I know to control what people say to the press....

I seriously doubt the administration would leak a document to their worst enemy the New York Times of all news papers.  See how the NYT handled it?  Predictably casting the story in the worst possible light.

Sometimes I wonder about your mental competency.

Carrick on November 29, 2006 at 09:46 pm

Would someone please explain to me just what was gained by the NYT publishing this classfied memo? In the past when they’ve published classified material they claimed “public interest” issues. The NSA wiretap issue is just one example.

Where is the “public interest” in publishing this internal memo? I can’t see what good it could have possibly done anyone other than al-qaeda and al-sadr.

Just another transparent attempt to discredit the prsident. Disgusting is too mild a word for it.

Thats debateable but I doubt it. The LEft tried blaming Rove on a leak one time and it never panned out. It doesn’t make sense to leak this stuff. I think eventually Bush is going to have to call out the NY times. I am surprised we have haven’t target it yet. But they are losing money that is the good side of things.

The NY times is nothing more than a mouth piece for the left wing loons and old europe.

If the NYTimes is a left wing mouthpiece,
why did it support the invasion of Iraq?

Now, d’ja hear ‘bout Judy Miller?

She disappeared, babe

After drawin’ out all her hard-earned cash

And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor

Could it be our boy’s done somethin’ rash?

This was an intentional “leak” from the White House. They wanted to let Maliki know to get his ducks in a row or we’re outta there but didn’t want the prez’s fingerprints on it.

The Times and CNN haven’t seen a terrorist they haven’t loved.

No matter who got arrested, it would certainly do my heart good to see the Times (or the Washington Post for that matter) report leakers to the FBI just once instead of publishing what they had illegally leaked.  I don’t care whether it’s Karl Rove, CFR members of the State Department, or Nancy Pelosi, someone needs to be relieved of their job and liberty for pulling this kind of stunt.

Because no one seems to take this seriously, we have apparently “government by gossip.” And just like Aunt Matilda didn’t do your cousin Ruth any favors by telling your grandmother that...., our highly paid gossips in the State Department, White House, and Congress aren’t doing us any favors, either.

They need to be prosecuted too. I don’t care who it is, it has to stop.

This was an intentional “leak” from the White House.

If the White House wanted something like this public they’d make it public.

There is nothing to support your conclusion.  The leaker had to remain unidentified in the article.

The only reason you’re saying this is to provide rhetorical cover for the New York Times.

Dave and Chad, the 1st amendment allows the press to print whatever it wants.  It does not protect the press from the consequences of what it prints.  Honestly, what a shallow and stupid point to try and make.

Get serious.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

The 1st Amendment is shallow and stupid?

Is that how freedom of speech is supposed to work? Say whatever you like...but we’re throwing you in jail after?

It sounds a lot more like treason than a free speech issue.

On the other hand, acknowledging the weakness of Maliki gives me hope.

No, Rob, the White House has leaked before.  there are any number of reasons why Bush doesn’t want to stand up and say, “Hey, Maliki, get your shit together or we’re outta here.!” So Hadley does the memo and it is leaked so that Maliki gets the message and there still can be diplomacy.

Puzzlefeet on November 30, 2006 at 10:27 am

or perhaps more like, ““Hey, Maliki, get your shit together or we will reserve the right to put all options on the table, wink, wink ..” ..a subtle ultimatum.

Rather than threatening to leave, how about if we promise to stay and see to it that Iraq has the leadership it needs to survive?  Maliki might get that hint.

..so boldly comitted to stay we wouldn’t mind changing a bad horse in the middle of the stream, if it came to that.

A threat to leave is really no threat at all.  A commitment to see a democratic Iraq capable of dealing with terrorists and insurgency communicates the necessity of a strong hand to effectively govern.

HG on November 30, 2006 at 12:08 pm

What leadership would that be, HG?  Maliki?  How’s that working for us so far?
