Whither The Privacy For Bristol Palin?

Michele Catalano on Bristol Palin’s pregnancy:

Privacy? Don’t bet on it. This is a whole fresh pile of mud for the left to start slinging. They’ll attack Palin’s family values stance, talk about how Palin teaches abstinence and start trotting out the hypocrisy meme. Except, this is not Palin who is the unmarried, pregnant teen. It’s her daughter. It’s not particularly shocking when a teenager does something against the parents’ teachings, is it? If we were to call out every parent who taught abstinence from sex, smoking, drugs or drinking then had a kid indulge in any (or all) of those, we’d be here all day.
The fact is, the left is all about privacy in the matters of the womb. Were they to stay true to their colors, this mantra of theirs would seem to preclude them from judging Bristol’s pregnancy and her choice to keep her child, right? It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

A good point.
Let’s remember that the liberal left supports allowing abortionists to spirit underaged girls across state lines for the purposes of obtaining an abortion. They also oppose making doctors notify parents of their underage child’s pregnancy. The left has worked consistently to remove parents from our children’s lives.
Yet, when an underaged child of a Republican gets pregnant, they’re all about tarring-and-feathering that Republican.
Hypocrisy? You betcha.

Oh my. You got to be kidding. This is far from politicising children.

I’m voting for her and McCain in November.

Obama’s people are voting for him and plugs.

The undecided people will go towards honor, security for this country and their children and grandchildren, and truthfulness.

    Obama will lose.

I spell hypocrisy….P.O.L.I.T.I.C.I.A.N. These politicians have more of a record on what they have said then I think anyone else in the U.S. Once in a while it comes back to bite them. This is still a ‘picking a scab’ issue IMHO

  • jpe

Am I supposed to be surprised that evangelical abstinence-only education doesn’t work? The only surprising thing about this non-story is that the daughter didn’t already have a kid.

At any rate, this is all just a distraction from: (1) Palin’s support of creationism in the classroom; (2) her belief that rape victims should be forced to carry to term the rapist’s child; (3) the ongoing investigation into her abuse of her office; and (4) the fact that she was a director of indicted senator Ted Stevens’s 527.

  • andrew

the hypocrisy in this is that Gov. Palin only supports abstinence training with no education about birth control. how can you convince others abstinence training by itself is sufficient when it didn’t work in your own home?

  • pparets

Trust me; if this was about an Obama girl, we would be told to butt out, period.

The Palin’s privacy was breached by obscene bloggers… mostly – of course – on the left.

Senator Obama just stated that this matter will not be, should not be a political issue in this campaign. He is right.

Not that that will stop DailyKos, MoveOn or Huffpo, and opportunists like Lestat.

    Alaska Sexual Consent Age Summary:

If you are at least 18 years old you may not have sex with someone if they are under 18 and:

    a) 3 years younger than you, or

    b) are living in your household or under your authority

If you are 16 or over, you may not have sex with someone who is under 13 or 3 years younger than you.

The hypocrisy here is that most, if not all cons, have called for the imprisonment of men in situations like Bristol Palin’s. If this guy violated the law, he should be prosecuted. If he violaated the law and is not prosecuted thn it smacks of unequal treatment. If it turns out he did not than it is a non issue.

Zsa Zsa, many things are a little more exciting and dangerous when “not permitted”. Just walking at night on a public street can be dangerous. It was merely exciting when I was a teen. I did nothing wrong apart from not being where someone else assumed I was. Now, doing the same thing might get one killed, raped or even tortured and kidnapped. Morals have degenerated quite a bit in the last forty years.

Could one of you post a link to Palin’s policy on sex ed which excludes instruction on birth-control?

It would seem that birth-control is an essential part of any sex ed and can be presented responsibly without condoning or promoting promiscuity.

  • HG

As long as its not about sex organs, sex, or education.

Link? Or, is this just what your read into “explicit sex ed”?

  • HG

Palin: Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support.

Thanks Hawk. Obviously Gov. Palin is not opposed to all sex ed.

Like most responsible adults, she wants to end the sex training programs in the govt schools that have sexualized our children. Sex education is the province of parents, not govt employees.

The Palin girl is 17. She’s been ‘dating’ the father for 3 years. Please do the math. Moma Palin has been watching her 14 year old daughter ‘date’ the same guy for 3 years. What does this say about this family? Also rumour has it the boyfriend was 21 when starting dating the 14 year old, all under Mama Palins nose. Chew on that.

Obama came out swinging for Palin’s privacy and reminded the world that he was the child of a teen mother.

For what it’s worth, I usually don’t follow political news. Until recently, I thought the Puma’s for Hillary was a sly reference to sexy, older women. Y’know, like a cougar.

  • richNJ

This is like watching someone pick at their scab. You have to wonder why they do it, but they cannot seem to stop. This is a non-issue unless you like picking at scabs.
Anyone with a kid realizes that you can show them what you believe is right from wrong but once they are on their own you hope they follow what you said. Most likely the biggest compaliners during this arguement do not have kids or believe their kids listen to them all the time and never..never lied to them. I give Palin credit for coming out with the information instead of pulling an Edwards for a few weeks. So far it seems once an issue comes up she faces it. Wow..when was the last time you seen a politican just face a problem and not spin it or whine. Good for her. I hope Obama is true with his word and keeps the attack dogs out of this.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/whither_the_privacy_for_bristol_palin Ky

I am a young woman, a few years older than Bristol, and I’ve recently moved to the state of Alaska. I think it is the obligation of parents to support their children in such matters, and though it may have not been ideal timing, I hope that Bristol is happy with her decision…its a little too late to not be happy about it!

However, her mother, Sarah Palin has made statements that if her daughters ever became pregnant as minors (in the state of Alaska you need parent permission to get an abortion if you are under 18) even in the case of rape, she would choose life and not sign for any abortion.

I admire women who have children in difficult circumstances, but I do not believe their is shame in seeking a different path for yourself. Children are wonderful and human life should be treasured, but it is also a very personal and permanent matter, that I hope Bristol chose for herself. Bristol is 17 years old, and I hope the decision to have her child was not forced by her mother.

There is just a lot of hypocrisy in the idea, that a child is not old enough to decide NOT to be a parent, therefor we must force them to do the right thing and BECOME a parent…I love babies, and hope to have one someday myself, however I know that when I was a teenager my mother would never have FORCED that bravery on me. I hope this was Bristol’s own decision. I also hope that she was involved in the conversations and decision making process of her family entering the national spotlight at this fragile time.

In this country, there are many different political views, none with absolute truth. It is important to respect the views of others when holding executive office. That would entail that you respect the opinion of your daughter. I’ve also believed that involving the abolishment of abortion in politics comes to close to violating the separation of church and state. There are many different types of families, circumstances, and lives. The truth of the matter is, that whether its a choice you would make or not, abortion has been a constant in various human cultures throughout time. Be it through herbs or ancient practices, there have been women who have controlled their reproduction in the endless and various circumstances that inevitably arise in populations of human beings, for thousands of years. There are Chinese records of royal concubines who have had abortions. Ancient Japanese, southeast Asian, Greek, and Egyptian records all show the social acceptance of abortions in dangerous health and poor situational pregnancies. This is not a dark part of history, it was just the first records shown. The aspect that has not changed about it, is that it is a personal and often secretive thing…probably not often involving the opinions of men and their knowledge of its occurrence.

To conclude, I hope that BRISTOL decided to carry this baby, in the bravery and sacrifices it will entail.

    Lestat,

The left has already been attacking Bristol before this story broke. They were spreading the lie that the youngest Palin really belonged to Bristol and that Sarah faked her pregnancy.

  • Lestat

That’s not going to work, Lestat. Palin was a Republican star, and a Governor, before her daughter got pregnant.

You aren’t honestly claiming that the media scrutiny of the Governor of Alaska is comparable to a vice presidential candidate, are you?

  • LoadTheMule

Well, as you yourself said in another thread, Rob–”This certainly doesn’t reflect well on the Palins as parents.”

  • HG

How can you attack the Palin’s convictions when Bristol is not aborting her child? Sounds consitently pro-life to me.

This whole situation could have been avoided with an abortion. Political expediency had nothing to do with Bristol’s decision.

  • Old Retired Petty Officer

    1. Family matter only, but the idiots on the left don’t see it that way. It is the Palin family’s business alone.
    2. It happened to my wife and I. The grand-daughter is now 7&1/2 years old.

Maybe ‘better’ need not necessarily mean ‘exciting and dangerous’. Strikes me that teens have sex all the time and, for the most part, turn out just fine.
