Where’s The Draft

Share |

Blogs for Bush:

I remember one of the dirty tricks of the Democratic Party last year in the campaign season was to claim that if Bush was reelected, a military draft would soon follow…
Well lefties, It’s now over a year since Bush was reelected… Did I miss the reinstatement of the draft?

Good question.
I remember back during the election when Democrats like Jim McDermott were busy traveling the country and telling young people that the re-institution of the draft was almost a certainty should President Bush get re-elected. Now, more than a year into the President’s second term, there is no indication that the draft is going to be resurected or even that such a thing is being considered.
The Democrats and the advocacy groups that went along with their scare tactics (I’m looking at you, Rock The Vote) should be eating crow on this one.

Angus: Don’t forget the “middle class tax cut” promised by Clinton/Gore. That never happened, either.

Very few people who were actually paying attention ever believed that to be true. Granted, that probably means that many younger people bought into it, but how many of them voted? Not very many, I am guessing. The bill in the House was sponsored by two Democrats, as I recall.

File this claim away will all the other pre-election claims that never came to pass. Some of the ones I remember reading were:

    * Bush would use the WoT to extend his term as President beyond 2008

    * Liberals would be rounded up by the CIA and put into newly-established reeducation camps.

    * Various celebrites / elites swore they would move out of the country if Bush was reelected.

Actually, I misspoke earlier. The line I remember was that Bush would declare martial law if he lost the 2004 election so he could remain president.

One of Kerry’s advisors event admitted that they were pedaling a lie after the elections.

The “Republicans are going to dismantle Social Security” is another one. Funny how trying to be proactive and prevent the mathematical certainty of a meltdown of the SS system is “trying to dismantle it”.

I completely agree Rob. There will be a few comments I’m sure that the second term is not yet over, but I don’t see it happening quite yet. Although, it won’t be Bush that reinstates it. It’ll be all those quacks like the ones down in San Fran that won’t allow recruiters. You can call me extremist if you like, but I have to agree that if they shouldn’t count too hard on the military protecting them if they won’t contribute to the military a little… And frankly, why not a draft? Reduce the Minimum number of years needed to serve down to two and draft people for those two years… surely retention rates would rise as you get people who stay, or who never thought that they would like it liking it…

Ok, I’ll brace for the flames in return now…
