When Do Father’s Matter?

There is no clearer picture of our society's complete disregard for a father's rights than this story via Vigilance Matters:

Just ask John Stachokus. Not long ago, Stachokus planned to have a child with his 23-year-old girlfriend. Together, they picked out the child's name and godparents. He imagined what it would be like to start a family. This made him happy.

Then one day, his girlfriend abruptly decided to terminate her pregnancy. She was reacting to pressure from her parents, Stachokus says. Stachokus responded by obtaining an injunction, temporarily prohibiting her from having an abortion. Common Pleas Judge Michael Conahan overturned that decision last week. Just that quickly, Stachokus' hopes and dreams for his child dissolved.

It did not matter that Stachokus was willing to take responsibility for nurturing and providing for the child. It did not matter that he has basic human rights. All that mattered was that his girlfriend suddenly changed her mind and decided to murder their unborn baby. You see, as far as the court is concerned, John has no say in the life of his own child. Apparently, the court regards John as little more than a turkey baster with a pulse.

I understand that the baby is in the woman's body, and that the woman has to deal with the majority of the rigors of pregnancy, but does that mean the father gets no say in the future of his child?

I think abortions should be illegal (excepting rape, incest or special medical reasons), but if for whatever reason we're going to keep them legal we should at least allow the father of the child to have a say into whether or not that child is going to be born.

I was thinking this one over the other day, wondering when a good test case might arise to overturn this nonsense.  Hows this:

Two lesbians decide to have a child, one donates the egg, the other carries the baby as a surrogate.  One or the other decides to terminate the pregnancy.

Who wins?

I agree with everything you said Susie, except the part where you say we shouldn’t ban abortion.  Why not?  What good reason (aside from those I mentioned in my post) is there for abortion?  To me, a need to shirk the responsibility of a child is not reason enough to have that child killed.

We can talk about father’s rights and maother’s rights until we’re blue in the face.  At the end of the day, somebody has to stand up for the child’s rights too.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

I think your right Robbie, but I also think that we shouldn’t ban abortion, but we need to counsel the women who want an abortion.  Let them know what the ramifications are.  I have a friend that had an abortion when she was 19 and wasn’t told the risks and now she’s married and can’t have children.  I’m not saying that allowing women to have abortions willy nilly is right either.  Women need to know what is happening when they have an abortion.  You are killing a child.  And if the doctors want to admit it or not there is damage done to the woman too.  There also needs to be something done to protect the rights of the fathers too.  They had a part in creating this life and should have a say in the childs welfare.  If the father wants to take responsibility for the child let him!!!! He has that right.

Your right Robbie.  Someone should stand up for the childs rights.  I agree whole heartedly, but if we ban abortions, I worry about all the women who will go to the back room clinics and who will be ruined so they can’t ever have children or even killed.  I think that knowledge is power.  We need to educate instead of ban.
