What’s He Hiding: Kent Conrad Angry At Republican For Daring To Investigate The Countrywide Scandal

Shame on this Republican for not leaving the investigation of the scandal up to the Democrat-run Senate Ethics Committee!
Apparently, Senator Conrad thinks he’s above suspicion. And why wouldn’t he? After all, the media back here in North Dakota certainly thinks so.

Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) lashed out at Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) after the Republican congressman pushed the powerful Democratic senator to divulge details about low-interest loans he received from Countrywide Financial.
In letters provided to POLITICO, Conrad has accused Issa of attempting to impugn his name in a GOP inquiry into the Countrywide mortgage scandal. Conrad said that the Senate Ethics Committee is the “appropriate forum to resolve this matter,” not Issa’s Republican staff on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
“It is unfortunate that you chose to damage my good name in your report without giving me the opportunity to provide my side of the story,” Conrad said in the sharply worded Aug. 3 letter. “But that damage has been done. I now have the opportunity to present my case before the Senate Ethics Committee, a fundamental right you denied me.”
“Shame on you for abusing your power,” Conrad said.
In response, Frederick Hill, communications director for the GOP staff on the committee, said: “Sen. Conrad’s whining doesn’t change the seriousness of the situation or the need for a full investigation of the Countrywide VIP program.”
Hill said the scope of the investigation goes “far beyond” the jurisdiction of the Senate Ethics Committee and is looking at Countrywide’s conduct in its program.

If Senator Conrad is so certain of his innocence, then what’s he got against another Congressional committee looking into the matter? After all, according to earlier comments, Senator Conrad was looking forward to cooperating fully with investigators.
Apparently he’s only willing to cooperate with the right investigators.

Getting “shamed on” by a crooked old priss like Conrad is something to be proud of.

-3-2-1…. here comes another good boy scout editorial from ND’s newspapers.

    Good answer.

I almost have the names memorized for the ” he’s doing a great job for ND” fan club that writes for him.

Given Conrad’s stance on keeping things in the Senate, one would wonder why he’s in favor of Congressional oversight of the Executive branch. Using his logic you could say that the justice department was the only entity that could investigate the President.

Conrad’s hiding something and he’s afraid it will get out.

    irony, anyone?

“…I now have the opportunity to present my case before the Senate Ethics Committee, a fundamental right you denied me…”

The way I see it, Kent, is that you have had just over a year to come out and tell the truth – the whole truth – about your involvement but you choose to stall, deny and stonewall. All the major media outlets in ND are very supportive and friendly to you; therefore, if you are telling the truth and have nothing to hide, you could have sat down with them and spelled out your version of what happened. Now that the sh*t may have begun hitting the fan, don’t whine and complain that you did not have a chance to tell your side of the story.

He must have been facing a mirror when he said that. Man, aren’t those libs great on projection!!

The Senator from DELAWARE has a good name?? Where is he get that idea? He’s a crook!!! No decent North Dakotan would believe he didn’t know he was getting a special rate. Too bad he’s not really from North Dakota any longer. Wonder how much time he’ll spend in the state during August. Bet he’ll spend more time sunning on the beach at his DELAWARE BEACH HOME!!!

    Ratbite:

As someone who has spent many a summer weekend at the beaches of MD, DE and VA they are a lot of fun (swimming, sunning, oogling, playing volleyball, eating, partying, etc)and beats listening to a bunch bitter people from fly-over country who cling to their guns and religion. Besides, would you spend time in an apartment when you had a beautiful beach home?

Conrad’s hiding something and he’s afraid it will get out.

    Whistler,

Quite possibly… and I believe I know what it may be. The email from Fienberg to Mozilo said,

I have spoken with Kent Conrad and he wants to refinance to a 15-year mortgage. The rate we are looking at is a 4.875% and it has a one-point charge.

    Angelo’s email response (3/17/04) was,

    Take off one point.

This is widely taken to mean that Countrywide dropped the 1 point fee, a discount to Conrad of $10,700 off his closing costs which were no doubt “rolled” into the new loan.

But suppose that was not the case. Suppose instead, Angelo and Countrywide took 1 point off the rate on the new loan.

We have only Conrad’s assurance that the rate on his million dollar beach house mortgage with Countrywide was 4.875%. There is another report that the loan was priced at 4.25%. That 5/8 point difference in rate would constitue a difference in monthly principle and interest payment of $342.60, or nearly $62,000 over the 15 year life of the loan! A full point differential in rate for a mortgage loan of just over $1 million would equal more than $79,000 over the life of the loan.

The only way to resolve these questions would be for Conrad to actually release the closing documents for all of his mortgage loans, including the Notes with the interest rate and payment amount. That would include the apartment building in North Dakota, the million dollar Delaware beach house, and his Washington, DC residence, a Capitol Hill neighborhood row house with 2 stories and 1972 square feet currently valued by the District at $890,010.

Conrad has already told the public that he was unaware of any preferential treatment he received from Countrywide. That turned out NOT to be the truth. Only the actual documents, and a check of then-current interest rates can clear this matter completely.

Conrad has already broken federal rules, and Senate ethics rules as well. He owes it to the voters to come clean.

It’s Thursday, and no criticism of Dennis’ ki$$a$$ editorial has appeared in the Herald. Do you suppose no one has written any or that the Herald just won’t publish them?

    Redundant!

By the way has anyone seen the frequent flying budget hawk?

  • sayanything-7715

Think about this. You have an million dollar home in Delaware on a beach and an apartment in Bismarck. Where do you think your going to be spending your nights. He should be able to legally run for Senate in Delaware if we put him out to pasture in 2012.

Yeah, their reasoning is always great.

“Well he brings lots of other people’s tax dollars into the state, so he’s allowed to be corrupt and unethical.”

Conrad’s hiding something and he’s afraid it will get out.

This is not going away! 17 senators under investigation by the ethics committee, 13 belong to the “most ethical” party, 4 repubs. Conrad is hanging by the short hairs. Too many want to know about this countrywide fiasco and its going to come out.

  • sayanything-6955

“It is unfortunate that you chose to damage my good name in your report without giving me the opportunity to provide my side of the story,”

Get the fuck under oath you bribe taking POS. Lets see how good your name is!

  • sayanything-6955

I think it is Bank of America that has all of countrywides “stuff” all boxed up and ready for the ethics committee and the justice dept to see, just waiting for some chickenshit dem on the committee to get some stones and issue subpoena’s.
