What Makes Soda so Sweet?
She really understands farming…
Republican Mark Kennedy’s campaign for U.S. Senate doesn’t let anything Amy Klobuchar says slip by.
Klobuchar, leading Kennedy in their battle for an open Senate seat, told an audience at a Moorhead debate last week that one thing she has learned during the campaign is “not to ask for a Diet Coke when visiting American Crystal Sugar in Moorhead.”
What does soda pop have to do with American Crystal? Nothing. For over 20 years, now, soda companies have been using high fructose corn syrup, not sucrose (American Crystal Sugar). Apparently, she should be representing Iowa, not sugar beet growers. In fact, corn producers are in direct competition with American Crystal.
Mark Kennedy’s campaign didn’t miss that one…
Kennedy’s spokeswoman shot back: “Amy Klobuchar’s latest gaffe proves once again that she has no clue about a very key segment of Minnesota’s economy. Large soft-drink manufacturers, specifically Coke, don’t use sugar. They use corn syrup, a direct competitor of sugar.”
