What About Huckabee’s Sermons?

A moot question now with Huckabee out of the race, but probably a fair one none-the-less.

Without weighing in on whether or not the content of Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s sermons should be denounced by Barack Obama, I do find one aspect of this story quite troubling.  We have now seen more sermons from Barack Obama’s minister in 48 hours than we ever did of Mike Huckabee —— and Mike Huckabee was a presidential candidate for 14 long months. Why is it acceptable to scour every last sermon given by Wright, but only weeks ago we weren’t allowed to see or read Mike Huckabee’s sermons?  In fact, not only was it totally ignored by the traditional media, but the few times the question of Huckabee’s sermons was raised, it was brushed aside as inappropriate.

This smacks of tu quoque to me, not to mention a convenient attempt at changing the subject, but back when Huckabee was still in the race I felt that his sermons should have been made public.

After all, campaigns are for learning about the candidates and Huckabee’s Baptist minister past is a big part of who he is.  Every bit as important as Wright’s influence on Obama as his reverend and mentor.

Is Huckabee a “fire and brimstone” preacher?

Kevin on March 15, 2008 at 11:29 am

I have actually heard Mike Huckabee Preach.  He’s great.  I have 4 years of tapes of Pastor Dan Rothwell from Fargo, Pastor Bob Schmidgall from Naperville, Pastor Todd Beery from Bolingbrook and Pastor Barry Kolb from St. Charles.  He just took a church in Texas. You can hear his latest sermon here.  And transcripts from every other sermon he ever preached.  He has been my pastor for years.

SO, don’t try that equivalences stuff, it don’t work.

All of them are pastors I sat under for a long long time.  Any ONE of them I would Defend and Say Hear what they have to say, they speak fundamental truth.

If they didn’t I would have got up and walked away.

SO, if you are struggling with that issue, None of those men who have been my pastor in the past do I have any fear of having to walk out on.

NONE.

Neither Mike Huckabee.  If you want to see him in a spiritual setting discussing the subject of absolutes, you will find him on Ken Copeland’s program here.  Doesn’t sound much like Rev Wright to me.  Mike is my kind of guy and if he had been anyone other than a sold out born again Christian he might well have been our candidate.

I’ll Bet Obama and Oprah now with they had got up and hoofed it out.

Gene,

I think Barry Kolb was a teacher of mine in high school.  Interesting that he became a preacher after the school closed, but not surprising.

TWO,

Yes he was a teacher at Valley Lutheran School.

I’ll bet he would be happy to hear from you.  I’ll send you his email.

The idea made you feel warm in your tummy, sort of like eating a hot malasada, but you just couldnt seem to bring yourself to dig up the dirt.  Strange, that.

Is Huckabee a “fire and brimstone” preacher?

Yes.  He is an absolutist on most religious issues and normally, taking an absolute stand about abortion and gay rights is fine--but the rhetoric that you use must be carefully chosen as doucebags like Robertson and Falwell have found out when they blamed the ACLU and abortionists for 9-11.

http://www.beliefnet.com/story/87/story_8770_1.html

JERRY FALWELL: And I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we’ve been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters - the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats--what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact--if, in fact--God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that’s my feeling. I think we’ve just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven’t even begun to see what they can do to the major population.

JERRY FALWELL: The ACLU’s got to take a lot of blame for this.

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, yes.

JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I’ll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way--all of them who have tried to secularize America--I point the finger in their face and say “you helped this happen.”

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur, and the problem is we have adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government. And so we’re responsible as a free society for what the top people do. And, the top people, of course, is the court system.

JERRY FALWELL: Pat, did you notice yesterday the ACLU, and all the Christ-haters, People For the American Way, NOW, etc. were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress as they went out on the steps and called out on to God in prayer and sang “God Bless America” and said “let the ACLU be hanged”? In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time--calling upon God.

I am positive that Huckabee has made statements that are similarly offensive in the manner that he spoke about groups such as homosexuals and abortionists.  But since he would not release his sermons, we will never know.  And obviously there must be a reason to not release his sermons.  Why else would you hide them?  Are they like Kerry’s military records or Hillary’s tax returns and First Lady Papers?  Never to see the light of day?

Huckabee aside, lumping Republicans in with any single religious figure isn’t fair.  I think the line is drawn when you tithe to a church.  Just going to one or hanging with the pastor isn’t the same as being a tithe paying member.  When you pay tithes, you accept the teachings and dogma of the church.  Plain and simple.  If you are not serious enough about church to pay attention to the teachings and the sermons and the church newspaper, then that is fine, but if you have no idea what they are saying, yet still pay tithes to them, you are either an idiot or a liar.

Where was the illustrious DMSM to dig up dirt on Huckabee when it counted?  Ah yes!  He was their favorite little evangelical sucking up votes from Romney.  They loved him.  Now they lament.  Sweet irony.

Actually, it’s “tu quoque” numb nuts.  And I wasn’t showing off.  It’s an obscure term so I thought some people might need a definition.  I don’t claim to be any sort of literary genius here (my spelling and typos can attest to that), just a guy with an opinion.

Excuse me for being helpful.
