What Happened To Scott Hennen

With news breaking yesterday that Scott Hennen was leaving AM1100 “The Flag” (the same station which broadcasts my morning radio show) I’ve been inundated emails, texts, phone calls, tweets, etc. asking to know what’s going on. After all, Hennen founded AM1100 and its parent company (which presides over three other stations as well).

Basically, what happened is that Hennen and his fellow investors (Hennen remains an investor in the group and part-owner of the stations) had a parting of the ways when it came to the management of the station. Hennen’s ratings are way, way up. The station’s ratings were way, way up. But sometimes, in business, people just have different opinions about how things should run. In this case, Hennen’s was the minority opinion.

So what’s next? I can’t say because I’m not really sure. Today I’m broadcasting my regular radio show as well as filling in for the 8am – 11am spot. As for Scott, he’ll be focusing his attention on Freedom Force Communications, which is a company that I am partnered with him on and is engaged in a number of new media and political projects.

The future of AM1100 is to shift to a more local focus.

I’ve had no small number of people tell me they’re worried that this had to do with Scott’s health. He made a trip to the Mayo Clinic recently and pre-cancerous cells were found in his colon. I can tell you after talking with Scott last night that he is healthy and happy.

So stay tuned. There are great things to come. There are a lot of very talented people at AM1100 and its parent company who will continue to generate great content, and Scott will be popping up somewhere again soon.

    Though I didn't always agree with Scott, I hope the "new direction" the company takes doesn't change their conservative stance. It's the only place to hear national figures such as Rush, Sean, and Mark Levin.

      I enjoyed Scott. I will miss him there. I love to listen to the different personalities and their take on what is happening in our world today. I can tell you right now, without these people, Rob, Scott, Rush, Sean, Mark and all the other fillins, without them, I would still have my head in the sand and wouldn't know what was happening around me. Me and many others would stop listening to this station if they took off people like Rush Sean and Mark.

    As is usually the case with shareholder disputes, they are usually about money and stubborness. Consider these thoughts:
    1. Presumaby, the flag paid a lot of money for the high end syndicated shows.
    2. The Forum reported the Flag was going to local programming. They would be going head-to-head against established KFGO and WDAY with nothing better to offer. This is suicide and only likely chosen if there is no money.
    3. From the listening end, the Flag appeared initially short of advertisers, but one would presume it had all the expenses and overhead. Compare to the broad spectrum of advertisers on KFGO and WDAY. This previous or accumulative debt burden went where?
    4. Looking from the outside in, strange and unexpected business relationships were forming well before yesterday. This has been something building for some time.
    5. Future business partners should keep this in mind. Are you willing to throw good money after bad? Certainly, there is an opportunity to make money, but how long will you have to wait it out?

    Money, money, money….Rob Peter to pay Paul? Perhaps. I hope not.

    I was dissapointed to hear he was out just like that, after being on the radio and starting the show it would have been nice to have a personal goodby. He's like a friend. That said I wish him well.

    So who is pressuring the station owners? The trend is to find small stations in out of the way places and the lefties lay it on, hoping their buds at the FCC will force changes.

    seriously, he sucked, rob. i know hes your pal, but he sucked. bad. i loved his fake 'huh. huh' laugh after he made a joke. you are better than he is….and he does this for a full time job.

    here is hoping they get beck on in the morning! sure, hes a kook far too often, but at least hes fun to listen to.

    Best of wishes to him and his family … I hope that he finds a national venue to continue his voice.

        Listen to ANY of his thousands of shows over the years and you will find countless instances of character assassination, innuendo, false premises and flat out lies. All of which are intended to impugn the other side’s opinion and ideas. You may have a legitimate disagreement with the other side ( a GOOD thing), but, if all you got for your argument is I HATE your opinion or your ideas and you are a loser for having them, it is bad for the country as a whole. Nothing gets accomplished and we are pushed further and further apart as a country. Wrap it in “the flag” and you have minions who follow without thinking. Glenn Beck is the WORST at this, which is a major accomplishment when compared to the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh, Liddy, Larson, et al… His contorted views are specifically designed to confuse and stoke fear, which is an easy sell in tough economic times. But you know what people? It makes him MILLIONS ($30 mil plus last year alone). Keep the fires going and he makes millions off of the fear. It is really sad.

            Again, thank you for your the compliment. FYI I am an avid hunter (pheasant and deer) and I do enjoy a good hockey. Having gone to the U of MN for undergrad and UND for Grad school, I am quite confused when they play. It's just that it's not my life…

    I’m so sorry to hear that Scott is out at the Flag. Rush, Hannity, Levin and the Common Sense Club were my reasons for listening to the station. If these programs go off the air, I will no longer listen to the Flag.

    I don’t like the sound of the “shift to a local focus.” While I greatly enjoy Rob’s show and enjoyed Scott’s show, the main reason I tune in all day every day at work is for Rush, Hannity and Levin. If those shows go off the air, I will tune out.

    Couldn't believe it when I heard it. I tuned in every day. If the station will be turning into more local news I will probably tune out. I live in Pelican and local news is old after about 15 minutes talking about pot holes in the street. When I work outside I always tune into "The Flag" . If the station takes Rush off the air and Hannity I will not be tuning in at all. Don't know all the circumstances and probably will never know. Enjoyed the station ever since it came on the air.

    I liked Hot Talk on KCNN way back when Hennen was but one of 4 or 5 hosts, who gave a much more rounded perspective of the issues. It was when he became the sole host that his egocentrism, his hubris, his hypocrisy, and his closed mind became apparent. He'd rant and excoriate the Unholy Trio, but when they were guests it was nothing but beachball questions. His liberal friend from DC Ellen would come on and say the most preposperous statements, and he'd never counter. Add to that his penchant for hanging up on people in mid-sentence when he disagreed with them. That he wanted to be the Rush of the Great Plains was clear. I'd also mention his obsequious support for building the Aurora/Alerus, but don't want to be viewed as piling on.

      That's all true. I had a hard time listening to Scott after his support for the Alerus and his refusal to say anything bad at all about the leadership of GF back then.

      So their panel way back then was Hennen, Bruce Tellman, Rick Williams, Robo-Babe and who else?

      Being polite to your guests is fine. Back then they'd be taking phone calls which I got a few shots in.

      You have to admit, that when Scott was up here, he'd bring in some pretty great guests.

        TW, I can't remember their names. Tellman came later. I'm talking about 87 or so. Hennen, some woman named Amy, the guy who was also on the park board who did the news. He drew great guests, but if they were conservatives, he'd drool over them. If Libs, he wouldn't criticize them.

          I started to listen to KCNN on November 4, 1992, in response to the event that happened the day before. I first listened to Rush, but I think I soon turned in earlier to catch Hot Talk.

          So I don't remember the first years of Hennen's show.

          I think added to the group that I already listed they had Mike MacNamara on there with them for a short while.

          So what was the lady's name on the show around 1995. She was very pretty and very nice.

            MacNamera came a lot later. He called in a lot when he managed the Paly It Again sports store. I don't know who the lady was, don't remember her name.

        to his credit, he brought in big names in fargo as well. the irony is thats why he failed to get higher ratings. he ball washed every republican to a fault to get those folks on. then people like me walked away. like elections, it only takes one or two points to make a station sell enough ads.

        id rather he been more like port. conservative (for the most part) regardless of the gops happy-to-support-BIG-BIG-government-when-its-good-for-me attitude.

          Actually, his ratings were increasing by leaps and bounds. The last ratings period had a big spike, and for the station overall the ratings had doubled in each of the last two books.

          All while the primary competitions' ratings have been declining.

            In the last book AM1100 climbed two shares to a 5.8, with Hennen's show specifically gaining 900 listeners average (2,600 total) per quarter hour.

            KFGO lost roughly 2 shares, and Heitkamp lost 200 listeners average per quarter hour.

            Obviously, KFGO is still dominance, but The Flag has a good trend going.

            The Flag has a good trend going?? Rob didn't they just kill the trend by terminating their relationship with Scott H.? If there was actually a trend, i would surmise it's now going the other way? How badly in financial shape is the Flag? I would guess we are witnessing the slipper slope of the Flag to soon have a "Closed" notice on their door and silence on the airwaves.

    I was not a fan of Hennen (just a character judgement–He spoke like a car salesman, disingenuous, prostrated before national celebs and name-dropped like a madman, a staus-monger), but if the flag drops Limbaugh, Hannity or Levin I’ll have better places to listen. I can get them out of Fergus or Park Rapids, so the flag will be no great loss…To me, anyway.

    I listened religiously to the station, and ever since he started in G.F. during the flood here. He started small and grew large, and made inroads with a lot of high powered people in life and politics. listening to him from the start was like watching a child grow up and evolve. Many good things and some that I wish he wouldn't have done or said, and in some cases seeming to take marching orders and talking points of the larger voices in the business. All in all I will miss the show, and probably give up on the station for seeminly being cowards in this matter, but this is life in the radio biz. He will pop up soon I'm sure and we'll listen again.

    Scott Hennen is a good and decent man who loves his wife, his children, and his church. Men like him are uncommon in our mixed-up culture, and even more rare in the world of showbusiness. The way he conducts himself in private, and the way he conducts himself on the air, are the same thing. His public support for the unborn and his frequent public statements of faith in Christ are two things that many guys do not do even among friends. His absence from North Dakota media is a significant event.

    I am not surprised by any of this. Nor am I surprised by the spinning of port. Port has sprinkled his spins here with glossy exaggerated statements like the 'ratings are way up' etc. I proved on this topic b4 that the "Flag' hopelessly underachevied in a market that they should of been dominating . These guys are always yammerring how conservative ND is , yet after 2 years of presenting a product of ' pure unadultered conservativism , their almost IDEAL station , they STILL GET ONLY HALF THE LISTENERS AS KFGO !! That's the fact jack! How hard is it to turn a radio dial???? Hennen has always shown a narrow minded view in his presentation of 'how things aughta be' , why should we be surprised when his view of business fails because of his stubborn myopia.

        This was Hennen's SOP for all guests: never ask a tough question because the person may not come back. If he had had Clinton on, there'd be no question about Monica, but Chelsea's shampoo. This was one of his great hypocrisies: cream people in his rants, but never touch them when they were on air with him.

    Hennen has interviewed ann coulter several times on his show and he was just another bobblehead of agreement , a fawning fan of hers when she said the 9-11 widows were 'enjoying their their fame and widowdom etc!' He has NEVER criticized coulter . When he interviewed the mad man ,Ted Nugent ,the faux tough guy , super rock and roll 'patriot' , Hennen never challanged him on the concert , good ole Ted did where he brandished a AK-47 and taunted Hilary Clinton and yelled "suck on his b*t*h!" ( all captured on video). Gee , good Christian Hennen decided I guess , that that sort of behavior was acceptable. I could go on and on. Did Hennen go ballistic when super Catholic Mel Gibson went bonkers? No that would be contrary to the Hennen's view of decadent Hollywood. Hennen has a tolerance for extremist behavoir for it fits in the big republican tent!

Dean , please try and defend Hennen by his acceptance of such outrageous behavior that is too common in his party too! Silence on those matters or manipulation of the focus of cruel behavior is NOT the mark of a good man , or a good Christian!             Again, to correct your misperceptioons: this new system is much buggier than the old one, which was easy to use. In the beginning, I tried it again and again, but my registration wouldn't go through. When I asked port for help, he did his usual insults and namecalling, while helping others through the process. When he banned the Reader Blogs, I lost interest in the site, so I haven't been trying for some time.
            I have recently started visiting the site again, and asked port for help again, and received the usual rude and abusive response.
            Even after he finally offered to help, when I followed the link, it said I wasn't registered. After trying a few times to make it work, the system locked me out for trying too many times.
            You could have asked, instead of making false assumptions, but that behavior is quite common on this site.

    Rob doesn't delete anything. I registered, etc., etc., months ago after the system changed. It was a snap. Then something went south about two weeks ago, and my own comments postings simply vanished into some black hole. I have tried every which way to get things back in order and it is beginning to look hopeless. Whoever set this system up needs to go drug-free, at least for a little while. Why do you see this (if you can)? Probably because I now have to comment as a guest.
