Wal-Mart Conference Day 1

Things have been going well here at the Wal-Mart conference thus far. I’ve seen and heard a lot of things I want to share with all of you. I decided not to “live blog” the event because, since is my first trip to something like this, I wanted to observe everything and then post my reactions at the end. What follows is a break down of my day:
The Tours
I took tours of the corporate headquarters and the distribution center earlier today.
The headquarters of Wal-Mart shocked me. The company is a global player and one of the largest corporations in the world, yet the headquarters looks like my high school. Here’s a couple of pictures I snapped from my phone camera as we were departing in the bus.

Excellent work, Rob. I linked back to my blog.

Weird that Wal-Mart once had a Marxist, anti-business (I repeat myself), high tax supporting demogauge on the board of directors.

Not so weird when you remember the money you paid to the First Lady of Ar-Kansas kept the state off of their back.

Nobody’s personally as greedy as a Marxist.

Didn’t Hillary Clinton work for Wal-Mart?

Why do you oppose free speech and the freedom of the press?

My cousin and I are leaving momentarily to go to Bismarck for the grand opening of the new Super WalMarts.  My cousin, who is a WalMart employee, broke her arm a few weeks back and hasn’t been able to work.  She has health coverage plus sick leave, annual leave, and short term disability available to her.  She likes her job and feels WalMart is good to her.

Did they fit you up in your blue vest yet Rob?

Look up the # of lobbyists on Capitol Hill and their funding.  Rob’s got a very good point here.  Most of the money bribing politicians funding campaigns is merely intended to prevent further bad regulation or achieve good regulations and corporate welfare.

When it comes to that you know the government has become too overreaching.

So whose the "Bagdad Bob" of WalMart?

Very interesting post, and an insight into the MSM’s usual pre-determined mindset.

Though I am retired now, I owned a hunting/fishing store in a very small town in Colorado.  A nearby town had a Wal-Mart only 11 miles away.  Contrary to the MSM’s mantra of how the company "destroys local mom and pop businesses", Wal-Mart was a boon to my business.  I could stock up on some items in large demand, unjtil my suppliers could re-supply my store, and still make a profit.  Plus, the personal service I could provide, i.e., the hot spots to fish, which flys worked best, and where the big elk were located, Wal-Mart personnel could not match!

    Tell Wal-Mart I appreciate them!

Good post by the way.  I assume the unions presentation was better received than the official Walmart stuff?

I dare say that the humble looking HQ might be one of the reasons that Wal-Mart does so well–and our public high schools do so poorly.  Rob’s right that "Le Mart du Wal" might be easily able to spend more–but they don’t.  On the other hand, the schools could easily spend a lot less–but again they don’t.  The end result?  High school graduates are qualified to wear the blue vest if they’re lucky.  Yikes.

Hi Rob!…Are you near White Water? Have fun and don’t have anymore car trouble.

  • TwoHotel9

Hey, Rob! You and Tom ought to corner Mr Barbaro and liveblog his responses to a few questions. Could be fun. Hell, be polite and fawning and get some one on one time with a few of the"journalists", you know, tell’em how much you admire them and all. Get them to talk about those uneducated, uncouth, unwashed, rightwing conservative bloggers. And be sure to record it all so you can transcribe it all in detail later. Seriously though, have fun and soak up whats going on around you, this is going to be very educational and rewarding.

Didn’t Hillary Clinton work for Wal-Mart?

She was on the board of directors during 1986-1992. Weird that Wal-Mart once had a Marxist, anti-business (I repeat myself), high tax supporting demogauge on the board of directors.

Sad that Wal-Mart has to butter the bread of people like Hillary Clinton just to keep the government from over-regulating them.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Hillary was on the Wal-Mart’s board of directors, but now recently returned some donations she got from the company.  Gov. Huckabee was actually asked about that at the beginning of the conference.  He told the Wal-Mart people in attendance that he would be happy to accept Hillary’s share of Wal-Mart’s political contributions.

It got a big laugh from the audience.

I assume the unions presentation was better received than the official Walmart stuff?

It is hard to say.  The Union was pretty sneaky in herding all the reporters to their press conference.  Nobody knew about it beforehand (or, at least, nobody I talked to), so basically they got their crowd by hoodwinking Wal-Mart’s audience and getting them over to where Rev. Hutchins was spewing his nonsense.

2H9, Mr. Barbaros already knows both Tom and I and probably wouldn’t sit still for any sort of questioning.
