Vonnegut Goes Nuts

Recently a trolling commenter left a link to this column by Slaughter House Five author Kurt Vonnegut. I deleted the comment but thought the link was worth posting.

Here's an excerpt from the column.

And on the subject of burning books: I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength or their powerful political connections or their great wealth, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and have refused to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles.

There are anti-democratic bullies trying to remove certain books from libraries? Where has this been going on? Maybe its been happening in Mr. Vonnegut's neck of the woods but here in North Dakota our libraries are free to carry just about any book they please (excepting porno and certain types of hate literature, of course). If there are people in this country censoring books I would certainly like to know about it so I can help resist the efforts.

Mr. Vonnegut continues:

In case you haven't noticed, we are now almost as feared and hated all over the world as the Nazis were.

With good reason.

In case you haven't noticed, our unelected leaders have dehumanized millions and millions of human beings simply because of their religion and race. We wound and kill 'em and torture 'em and imprison 'em all we want.

Piece of cake.

In case you haven't noticed, we also dehumanize our own soldiers, not because of their religion or race, but because of their low social class.

Send 'em anywhere. Make 'em do anything.

Piece of cake.

The O'Reilly Factor.

I had no idea Vonnegut subscribed to such rabid, left-wing principles. He's got everything here.

In denial about the Florida results of the 2000 election....check.

America=facism...check.

America "dehumanizing" muslims...check.

Not caring about soldiers...check.

Random allusion to The O'Reilly Factor without it even making sense in context...um...check (seriously, what's that all about?).

Hell, he even compares Bush to Hitler:

Our president is a Christian? So was Adolf Hitler.

You'd think that a veteran of WWII would have more respect for the evils of Hitler's regime and the Holocaust than to belittle their historical meaning by comparing them to the Bush administration. I mean, c'mon. Hitler killed over 8 million Jews. He exterminated them one-by-one in factories. All Bush has done is free two middle-eastern countries from oppressive regimes and kill some terrorists along the way.

I love Mr. Vonnegut's novels, but I think the old coot has lost it.
