Vigilantes Get It Wrong

Those on the left are often quick to note the potential danger of republican government carried to autocratic extremes, although being liberals, their argument is rarely so orderly and reasoned… and is often a good deal more shrill and vehement besides.

But though the Left rarely cares to admit it, there is far more danger to be found in too much democracy, which can all too easily degenerate into mob rule.

MARSHVILLE, N.C. - An angry mob fatally beat a man whom they mistakenly thought was involved in the disappearance of their friend, shortly before police arrested and charged another person in the crime.
Union County Sheriff’s deputies found Tony Lorin Blakeney at his home with serious injuries Friday. He later died at a hospital.

Ten men, ages 16 to 30, were charged with murder in the attack. They were being held without bond until an Oct. 4 court date.

“This is the worst beating attack I’ve ever seen,” Sheriff Eddie Cathey said.

Authorities said they don’t believe Blakeney was connected to the disappearance and death of Patrick Antwone McClendon.

They used to call this a ‘lynching’.

Just as disgusting, in my opinion.

Ken,

I don’t think Mr. Blakeney will take note of any distinction… nor should the jury that hears these cases.

Disgusting is far too generous.

On the other hand an armed citizen defending his home is much less likely to shoot someone by accident than a police officers.

That makes sense of course.  The police officer is showing up to a situation and location he knows nothing about whereas the homeowner knows who belongs and who doesn’t.

I just didn’t want the vigilante thing to cross over to armed self defense.
