Video Of US Soldiers Throwing Puppy Off OF Cliff Outrages The Masses

I guess a lot of people are ticked about this video apparently showing a US soldier throwing a puppy off of a cliff while a buddy jokes around.

My reaction?  Meh.  I don’t like seeing the puppy hurt/killed any more than anyone else, but there are sadistic jerks all over the place.  That these two just happen to be US soldiers is neither here nor there.

Also, it’d be nice if the people on the left currently trying to manufacture this into some grand “our soldiers are monstrous sociopaths” theory a la the New York Times were capable of this level of disgust when it comes to the things our enemies do in the name of their cause.

Comments

Video has been taken down.  I read that the puppy was likely dead.

The Debate is over!  Global Whining has been confirmed.

It’s no more ridiculous to try to pump one incident into proving that all soldiers are psychopaths than it is to deny frantically that any such thing ever, ever happens when a large group of frightened, armed young men get together in a war zone. Let’s face it, a group of 140,000 may be way too small to manage an occupation, but statistically it’s going to contain some emotionally troubled and immature people who can’t handle the extraordinary stress of combat.

Is killing a puppy worse than 9/11? Obviously not. Is it our concern if people like this are establishing the image of the U.S. as a heartless, imperial invader with people all over the U.S.? You bet your right-wing patootie it is.

as a librul i have to agree with you 100% this is not a story move on, there are sadistic jerks anywhere, probably less in soldiers than the general population, but do think that the reason this story has legs has nothing to do with the evil mainstream media.

This is a white girl lost in aruba kind of story.  You got a cute puppy being thrown over a cliff.  So, basically you have to just give up and let the story play out.  Next on Fox News, Shocking Video of Puppy thrown over Cliff.  But, Most Marines are Honorable.  And Now another View of That Puppy Clip.

eric taylor on March 4, 2008 at 11:00 am

Apparently, YouTube has pulled the video.

Michelle Malkin noted earlier today that the “puppy” had an unnatural stiffness, suggesting that it was either already dead, or that it was a stuffed animal rather than a live one.  I guess we’ll never know for sure, and this will remain one of life’s more shallow mysteries.

“Poverty of goods is easily cured; poverty of the mind is irreparable.”

Bat One on March 4, 2008 at 11:15 am

Some other ways of figuring out whether it’s real or not:

1.  Conservation of momentum; the body of the thrower will go backwards as it’s being thrown if it weighs much.

2.  Bones or none; the “animal” will tend to flex around the hand in a way that reflects the fact that it does, or does not, have bones.

My take; given how quickly it went around liberal sites, I’m guessing it was a joke that nobody thought about before posting it as reality.

Now that’s a scandal.

Unfortunately, Conservative war supporters made the “Rule of Black & White” (i.e. “if you’re against the war, you’re against the troops").

Therefore, all war supporters support the dog killing troops.  Too bad you don’t get the opportunity to support some soldiers and not others.

Sorry.  Them’s the rules!

Robert in BA on March 4, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Actually, “Warpublican Review,” it turns out that Beauchamp was not shouted down.  Rather, a number of veterans, as well as soldiers currently serving in Iraq and elsewhere, provided information that clearly proved his claims to be complete fabrications.

Kinda like your claim that the dog’s mouth is moving.  Sorry, but I can’t resolve that in a grainy YouTube video, even if I can believe that your source didn’t make use of Photoshop to try to insert that while putting Al-Qaida propaganda in it.

The reality is that the Marines are going through this, frame by frame, and most likely interrogating the grunts who put this video up, to determine what really happened.  One side of the political spectrum respects this process.  The other is telling us that the dog’s mouth is moving, and that Scott Beauchamp was shouted down.

Rand on March 4, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Hmmm.  I wonder what Little Green Footballs‘ take on this may be.  They have been very good about debunking photo-shopped and faked news coming out of Al Jazeera and AP Jazeera.

I do hope that it was a fake.  If it was true it was uncalled for violence against an innocent.  I recall that in some Vietnam-era snake-eating training (as the Army SF-types were called) one exercise was purportedly to give the trainees a cute puppy, allow them to befriend it, then order them to kill and possibly eat it.  It was intended to break them from the soft, pink fuzzy-bunny, suburban mindset into one hardened into the willingness to kill under orders.

I should state that I never saw the rumored exercise first-hand (and I did work with SF-types in Robin Sage exercises) nor heard of it discussed by any SF or SEAL types while in training.  I can see, however, how such an exercise might be used in SERE training (Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape), or POW training.  Not for the cruelty aspect, but for sheer survival.

All in all, I hope this was a fake.  If it isn’t, it is a bad thing, but against the backdrop of that region as a whole, it is small potatoes.  How about Al Jazeera doing a video special of the torture chambers or rape rooms of Saddam’s Iraq, or the stoning and mutilation of women in Iran?

Contrast this to their deafening silence on the atrocities that are being carried out to this day.

One such atrocity is the Iranian death by hanging of a 16 year old girl.

First, that it had never happened, for more reasons than I need to bore you with.

Second, that the MSM would have focused the same amount of attention on Al Qaida in Iraq burning two human prisoners alive last month.

Just a clarification… the service members involved were Marines, not soldiers.

US Army service members == soldiers
US Marine Corps service members == Marines
US Marine Corps service members =/= soldiers.

The USMC has expressed its outrage over this (if it proves to be true).

...and yes, despite the fact that the military is far more well-behaved than the general population, there will be a few bad apples (that they do a great job of getting rid of when they are identified).

Most gun owners frown on that behavior as it gives us all a bad name.  Same here with this guy.  Some people are just twisted.

That ignoring the dog’s pain because “it’s just a dog” is no different from ignoring the pain of Iraqis because “they’re just Iraqis”.

Non sequitur

I don’t think anyone is suggesting that we ignore the dog’s pain, assuming that this allegation is true.  But we have seen an awful lot of propagandizing out of the Middle East—at this point it is Islamist Modus Operandi - Jenin, the little boy killed in the Israeli crossfire, the endless photoshopped imagery coming out of coverage of the IDF incursion… lies, all lies.

Then back to the incongruous comparison.

Still, a dog is a dog.

Humans are humans.

Humans routinely raise and slaughter animals and we eat them after processing at Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Smokeys Bar- BQ and Capt’n Jacks’ seafood.

While humans do get particularly attached to certain animals, they are still nonetheless—at the end of the day—animals.

So to say the pain of a single puppy (assuming this piece of cinema is not simply propaganda) is wholly out of proportion and different than the suffering of many humans as a people.  It’s an inapt comparison at the very least, but also a standard Leftist attempt at moral equivalence.

It’s propaganda of the cheapest sort and not worthy of logical and honest debate.

THe video was a bit grainy, but not so much that you can’t see that the puppy doesn’t wiggle the whole time he is holding it, it is hanging loose.  Having raised a lot of dogs, I can tell you if you hold a puppy by the scruff of his neck he twists his hind legs in the air if you don’t hold them to give him support and he will “arp” in protest to being held that way.  Having grown up on a farm where I had to work around living, sick, and dead animals, and having majored in biology and handled more carcasses that I’d care to admit, I also know that if a 4 legged animal flies through the air whether launched by a pain in the neck cousin or chased out the barn door by a stronger opponent, its limbs will flail in the air.  My assessment is that this animal was dead and it was in a transitional state of rigor.  I couldn’t get the sound, so I can’t assess supposed yelps as it was flying, but its possible that those sounds were supplemented by humans in the vicinity.
The video of the clip I watched was so grainy, it was difficult to see the uniforms clearly but something doesn’t look right about them, like they aren’t pixelated like Marine uniforms, and the shading doesn’t have the right tones.  They look maybe like the old Desert Duty Uniforms that the US ARMY stopped using like 3 years ago, but even then not quite right.
There are a lot of things that just seem suspicious.  But whether the guys are really Marines or actors, or whether the puppy was dead or not, someone did something really gross and horrid thing, filmed it, and then put it on the internet.  Some people are just too sick for words.

While I find the behavior reprehensible, I find the over reactions to it more so.

I have far more issue with someone who would threaten to deprive a fellow citizen of country, liberty, and the means to survive absent a verdict by a jury of their peers.  Even more so as animal cruelty, while repugnant, does not rise to the level of a hanging or banishing offense, let alone death by starvation or dehydration.

So would you care to modify/clarify your remarks, or would you like to enjoy the same level of legal protection if you were to find yourself accused of something a lot of folks find to be a “fucking heartless act”?

Monroe Marine’s family ‘living a nightmare’ as puppy tossing video goes viral

A Monroe Marine’s sister said her family is “living in a nightmare” as news spreads around the world linking the man to a video of what appears to be a U.S. Marine throwing a puppy off a desert cliff.

Death threats and graphic descriptions of physical violence continue to be directed at the Marine and his extended family as their personal information is being spread on the Internet.

That information on Tuesday continued to be posted on various blogs, social networking sites and online forums.

So, are such threats to the family of someone accused of wrongdoing now acceptable?  Answer carefully because the shoe will wind up on another foot soon enough, and will likely pinch like hell.

Hello,

I am a former US Marine and I have just watched the video and yes it is hard to tell if this is a real video or not but to me it seems like it just might be, unfortunatly.

I think whether it is or not it is a very sad day for our Marines.  The reality is that each and every Marine wears the uniform not only of our beloved Corps but of all service men and all Americans.

These Marines need to step up to the plate and take responsibility for their actions hence the code of Honor.  The Marine Corps also needs to take this action very seriously and expidite this investigation and not harbor these two individuals for even one day.  The punishment should be swift and there should not be a second chance for these Lance Corporals or whatever rank they are.  They should be subject to the UCMJ and they should be given a discharge unbecoming or even more suitable a dishonorable discharge as their actions truly are DISHONORABLE.  They have pinned yet another black mark on the colors of the United States Marines through this video whether it is authentic or fake.

If this is a fake video they should be put in front of the American public to answer for their actions and they should be given the same punishment as if it were real as this is what was portrayed and this was their intention as I see it.  Their intentwas for this to look real therefore they should be punished as it IS real.  This may seem harsh but their actions and their consequences are harsh to all Marines, all Americans and all civilized human beings.

These individuals carry a heavy load wearing the title “Marine” as it is not a title that is given, it is earned.  These individuals have betrayed that honor and therefore have chosen to forfeit the honor.

I am saddened on this day to see such a dispicable and horrifying video of this nature.  This poor creature did nothing wrong and these individuals should be ashamed of their actions and should honor the code of the Marines and step out of the ranks of those that came before them and those that will follow.

I apologize to all American’s on behalf of the United States Marine Crops and say this is not what we are.

Semper Fi Leathernecks and I am sorry to see something as horrible as this.
