Chris Berg moderated a debate earlier this week between proponents and opponents of Measure 5 which would expand North Dakota’s animal cruelty laws. It was a revealing exchange between the two groups, I think.

Valley News Live – KVLY/KXJB – Fargo/Grand Forks

North Dakota has a busy ballot this November, and I haven’t spent a lot of time thinking about this measure. Mostly I oppose it because I don’t really think North Dakota has a problem with animal cruelty. I think this ballot initiative is unnecessary, and I don’t support unnecessary laws. It’s also being backed by the Humane Society of the United States, and extremist animal rights group that is only slightly less obnoxious than PETA (and often partners with that more infamous group on initiatives).

This is an initiative backed by animal rights zealots who have, as their ultimate goal, the restriction of ranching, hunting and fishing activities.
