University Of Maine Art Department Uses American Flags For Rugs

Because laying the flag down on the ground for people to walk on is art:

Maybe it is art.  I’m certainly not any sort of expert on the subject, but for me art typically involves creativity.  There doesn’t seem to be anything very creative about littering a hallway with American flags to be walked on.

Highlight moment: The provost who confronted the veterans who showed up to provost says the flag is “just a piece of cloth.”

Exit question: Were the vets who showed up to protest clinging to their love of the flag because they’re bitter?

As a person with an Art degree, let me tell you why I don’t pursue art anymore. Art is irrelevant as a form of communication. The spoken word and video have replaced it because today’s art professors refuse to step away from the forms and the expression of the 50’s and 60’s and to move back toward asthetics.

In that gap, advertising art has surpassed modern art in it’s ability to communicate to the viewer. Video has surpassed formal art. Computer art has surpassed formal art. As a result, today’s “modern artists” are largely unknown, unimpressive and irrelevant to modern culture. As in biologcal evolution, they have failed to evolve past “shock art” so they are doomed to become extinct, in terms of cultural importance.

The “flag thing” is a lame attempt at shock art, carried out by ass clowns, appreciated only by ass clowns and is, at best, a 15 second clip on a news commentary. Degas, Renior, Manet or Dine, it’s not.

rbb:  you are often silly, you are mostly irrelevant, but this is the first time I can remember that you are just tedious.

It’s hard to imagine what political persuasion you hold that would not find the desecration of the flag odious and the disrespect to these veterans despicable.

Reckoned as Brainless Bob can’t tell the difference between an actual flag and a picture of a flag on a door mat.

boob? Perhaps you would like to enlighten us as to where and when this “pic” was made? A caption explaining why the President and First Lady are walking upward away from someone’s non-representational art in form of bas relief wall mural? And exactly what the flag you placed below W’s foot is supposed to represent? Since to appear to “feel” you have something to say, say it leftard. That has worked so well for your boy, Obamoid, why don’t you give it a try?

As for the video, I especially love how the only people stepping on the flags are the “art” students and their facilitators. The girl on crutches maneuvering her way around the the flags as she went down the hallway was good, too.

The ‘art’ project was effective because there were vets there protesting. Without them it’s just cloth on the ground. With them, they are symbols of our country.

We have a few codes dictating how the flag is to be displayed. bush violated those codes, was he conducting an art project too?

See how liberals corrupt the very language? You have to put the word “art” in quotes to try to force it to mean something it does not.

What “art” is today, is calculated largely on its shock value: Butchered animals, dung, a crucifix in a jar or urine, flags under foot...I don’t consider any of that to be art!
When you have to put the “air quotes” around it, you give the word a different meaning.
rbb is not alone in this.

Good post Rob B.

The American flag rug makes America look like a label.  Pop Culture America...nothing new.

I believe on the whole, order is better than chaos and modern art is a fascination with chaos and pessimism. Yuk!

The old ways of art is lost and gone: to express what is beautiful and precious.

of the readymade
on society has a historical
place in modern art.

I’d rather have a Caravaggio
on my wall.

Then art is is!

I made quite a scene in the Tate when I came across an exhibit of dada.
I am sure the patrons thought I was part of the art.
I was rebuked by a stern matron, a tsk tsk as I recall, and went on to the Turners and Blakes.

this comment wins the asinine award. one might begin by inquiring where your art degree is from? i won’t let my kids go there. spoken word and video aren’t art? tart.

i am all for this art. i hope you jackasses know that your vitrolic reaction is the intended result. its not merely flags on the floor, its social art… and you are part of it. thanks for being effing predictable. btw, the nation is a group of people. nothing abstract, not a flag. y’all hate your neighbors for having different views, love the flag, and try to convince yourselves you are being patriotic? ha.

When all is said and done, the flag is nothing more than a piece of cloth. However, that cloth is the symbol of this country. It is the character of the people that make a country great. I am by no means a flag-waving, lapel wearing patriot. I don’t have to prove my patriotism to anyone. I am an American. Plain and simple. However the art exhibit is nothing more than desecration of our flag.
They should be ashamed.
