Unemployment Drops Slightly From 8.3% To 8.2%

US President Barack Obama smiles during

The Obama administration will no doubt be applauding yet another slight drop in the nation’s unemployment rate according to the latest jobs report, but it’s worth noting that according to this chart released by the administration as part of their sale of the stimulus spending unemployment was supposed to be at 5.8% by now:

The stimulus has, clearly, been a failure.

But beyond what the Obama administration sold us on the stimulus spending, this is a weak report. The nation added just 120,000 jobs, the smallest number since October and a lot less than the 203,000 projected by some economists. It’s also not quite enough to keep up with population growth, which requires about 150,000 new jobs per month. Plus, when you consider that we have to add roughly 262k per month to get back to where we were in December of 2007.

So how, despite all of this, did the unemployment rate still go down slightly? Participation in the labor force is still dropping:

Our job markets are still going backward, but because the labor pool is also shrinking, the unemployment rate is going down slightly.

There is no recovery here.

    “Unemployment Drops Slightly”

Only because more have stopped looking for work.

    • sbark

thats right…..the Obama propaganda machine is simply putting less and less people “in the market” for jobs……

Obama is in full re-election mode….and the media, headed by AP chairman as the cheif bullhorn is in full assist mode.

more and more people have simply given into despair and dependency as planned by the Obama regime…….

    • Bat One

Not because more have “stopped looking” for work, but because the federal government says they have stopped looking.  The economy only created 120,000 new jobs last month, less than half of what is needed to remain at the same level of unemployment.  The Obama administration is massaging the numbers to make its failed economic policies and deficit spending look less blameworthy.  That 8.2% figure might appease liberal Democrats running for reelection and their mind-numbed supporters, but to anyone looking beyond the headlines this report is just one more indictment of Obama’s failures.

Not bad, considering the obstructionist gop congress this President has to work with.

Typical of nutters to whine about good news, though.

Oh, here are more things for nutters to whine about:

Buoyed by record monthly sales of its Chevy Volt hybrid electric plug-in
car in March, General Motors will resume production of the Volt at the
Detroit Hamtramck plant one week early, the United Auto Workers told TPM
    on Tuesday night.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Demand for fuel-efficient cars shot higher in
March, as consumers sought relief from climbing gas prices.
As a result, Detroit automakers are finally winning the competition with their overseas rivals in this important part of the auto market.
Motors said Monday that in March the company sold 100,000 cars in the
United States that got 30 miles per gallon or better on the highway.
That’s a first for the company.

    …Overall, auto sales
have been particularly robust in 2012, leading some forecasters to
raise the sales targets to close to 15 million vehicles this year, up
from only 12.8 million last year.

Yes, we are obstructing this punk in the White House from mandating us into a Marxist “workers’ paradise”; we elected them to do just that.  We prefer to be free people making free choices, rather than being slaves to a punk ideologue.

    • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

Dead center ten ring.  Now watch these SAB lunatics ignore the facts and distract with wild accusations of socialism.

Thanks to BigGovernmentR180, and McCain voter, my statement is already accurate.

      • Hal406

You are ignoring the facts when they are not convenient to you.  Remember you were jumping with joy when new job numbers barely surpassed the 200k mark?  They are at 120k now and that is terrible for the economy and any recovery.  Also, how many more people dropped out of the labor market last month?  Again, over 100k.  Obama is a one man job killing machine.

    • Hal406

Nice try.  Obama had two years with a super majority of Democrats in the US House and Senate.  Obama is an economic failure.

      • http://realitybasedbob.sayanythingblog.com/ realitybasedbob

(let me try our host’s trick right here)

You don’t know what super majority means, do you, Hal?

        • Hal406

Enough to pass a very unpopular, unconstitutional, health care bill.

          • http://realitybasedbob.sayanythingblog.com/ realitybasedbob

            Guess again.
Here’s the question, Halster: What is a super majority in the House and Senate?

        • Jfisher17

Is that like you not knowing what a “gop congress means”? Thought so.

    • Jfisher17

“Record monthly sale of the Plug-In…” Is that because they didn’t sell any in Feb., or is it because they sold 10 in Feb. and 15 in Mar.?  Anyway, it would be typical lib logic to wait years and years to make their Plug-In break even. “Obstructionist Gop congress..” Really? Last time I looked, the libs controlled the Senate, which I heard somewhere was part of congress. Must have been just a rumor.  libtard logic cracks me up.

Anyone who buys a new car as a way to save money is an economic imbecile.

    • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

That will come as a shock to some of my friends who leveraged the cash for clunkers plan that enabled them to not only get a car for less, but also benefit from the gas savings by purchasing a hybrid.  All of that cash savings enabled my friend to buy a truck for himself, the wife still drives the hybrid, saving them precious dollars to pay for their new child expenses.

“That will come as a shock to some of my friends who leveraged the cash for clunkers plan”

At the tax payers expense, What a surprise that your friends are moochers.

        • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

Even those who didn’t save money by purchasing a hybrid for an older car that didn’t get great gas mileage.

          • Guest

Moochers at the tax payers expense.

      • Bat One

So, you’re admitting that hybrids are clunkers?  Interesting.  I wouldn’t have thought you had that much sense… even at taxpayer expense.

        • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

          I wouldn’t have thought…

          You didn’t.

  • Bat One

If you read the rest of Team Obama’s 2009 “stimulus” promoting white paper, you’ll see that not only was unemployment predicted to be a 5.8%, but annual GDP growth was supposed to be at 4%.  Last year, by the administration’s own calculations, the nation’s economy grew at a paltry 1.7%.

    More failure.

    • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

Little by little we improve upon the bush recession that you denied existed when it was falling upon us.

In short, who really gives a shit what comes out of your idiotic mouth?  You really aren’t very good when it comes to understanding our current economic problems and your interpretations get a lot worse as time goes on and you leverage right-wing talking points to revise history.

By the way, kid, what ever happened to that Herman Cain fella?

      • Guest

“You really aren’t very good when it comes to understanding our current economic problems”

Aren’t you the lying schmuck who claimed to have paid 15% capital gains tax (plus penalty and interest) rather than doing a 5-7% mortgage? Sucker

        • Bat One

Guest,  He claimed to have paid 15% capital gains rather than getting a mortgage???   I must have missed that one.  Have you a reference you can pass on, or at least a general idea of when and under what subject thread this took place?  The whole thing sounds intriguing… if it’s true.

      • Bat One

Sorry, but the personal insults, even your drab, unsophisticated ones, aren’t especially objectionable.  Particularly as you seem to have nothing else to offer (kinda like Obama, huh?)  But they would be much more effective if you actually HAD something more, and could manage to factually refute what I’ve said along with the invective.  Of course, if you were able to do that, it would put you up on the same level as the grown-ups, and we all know that isn’t gonna happen any time soon.

When you can authoritatively contest any of the numbers I’ve posted above, please be sure to let us all know.  Meantime, why not try to at least upgrade those churlish, pedestrian insults?  I’m sure at least some of the adults here would trouble themselves to congratulate you for doing so.

        • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

Why would I refute your claims that the GDP has increased along with a decrease in the unemployment rate?  By any measure that’s better than when bush handed a crashing economy over to Obama that was dangerous on a global scale.

It’s no secret to anyone paying attention that the economic problems bush handed over to Obama were far worse than estimated, that’s much, much worse than even your feeble minded attempts to pretend the recession didn’t exist in the first place.

Again, remind me why anyone should take your opinion seriously when you can’t even predict what everyone else could, including the MSM that you were condemning for being right at the time?

          • Econwarrior

Democrat programs crashed the economy, little hanni.

          • Bat One

Of course they did!   After all, it was Democrats who forced Fannie and Freddie to lower their credit standards and jump into the sub-prime market in a huge way to offer housing and buy the votes of the “under-served.minority communities.”  And it was Democrats, (Jim Jones, Franklin Raines, and Jamie Gorelick who fraudulently boosted Fannie’s earnings by illicitly buying billions in sub-prime mortgage backed securities to jack up their own multi-million dollar management bonuses, creating even more demand for sub-prime mortgages and inflating the housing bubble even further.  And then when President Bush and the Republicans tried to push through F&F reform legislation, twice, it was the Democrat Head of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank (whose live-in boyfriend, Herb Moses, was the Fannie executive in charge of creating and marketing sub-prime mortgage programs!) who blocked one such reform attempt in the House, and Senators Chris Dodd and Barack Obama who blocked another in the Senate.  Ironically, both Senators were the recipient of dubiously legal sweetheart deals.  Dodd from Angel Mozillo, head of Countrywide.  And Obama from convicted fraud artist and Chicago slumlord, Tony Rezko.

Once again, I feel compelled to mention that there is a concept in statistics called “statistical significance”.  It refers to the likelihood that a change in a statistical measure is of real importance. A change from 8.3% (or .083) to 8.2% (or .082) is rather small and, even though I can no longer remember the various mathematical tests for significance, not likely to reach the statistical significance threshold.

Hopefully, I will live long enough to someday come across this information in the media’s coverage of the Obama Administration’s well-manipulated numbers.

  • DopeyDem

They will readjust the numbers next week when no one is watching. Unemployed will go up, employed numbers will go down. Happens every time. Amazing how companies are laying off employees, like Yahoo, and the unemployment number keeps dropping. Bush 43 was railed that he didn’t do anything about high gas prices and the dreaded rising unemployment (5%) WonderBO gets a pass that he is helpless to do anything about either one. Leadership from the sphincter.

Let’s just say that Obama is bad luck & quit quibbling.  In earlier times, and in more enlightened societies, Kings & Chieftains who had presided over a period of bad harvests were simply sacrificed, not because of any particular reason—reasons being treacherous things—but because they happened to have been in charge.  Divisiveness was thereby completely avoided.

  • ndoldman

If obama was a republican there would be stories running about homelessness, bag ladies and what ever else bad could be written now he is a hero for doing nothing but making the market woorse
