A state housing agency in Wisconsin has decided to continue offering mortgages to illegal immigrants.

Milwaukee Business Journal - Despite protests from a state legislator, the Wisconsin Housing & Economic Development Authority agreed Friday to continue its pilot program providing affordable home mortgages to undocumented immigrants.

State Rep. Glen Grothman (R-West Bend) opposed the loan program at WHEDA's monthly board meeting May 21 in Madison. Grothman, Assembly majority caucus vice chairman since 1999, said such a program is an "insult" to immigration laws and immigrants who have waited to become U.S. citizens.

In a statement, Grothman expressed disappointment with the board's lack of action.

"How can we expect employers not to hire illegal aliens, or border patrol or (Immigration & Naturalization Service) workers to enthusiastically do their jobs when a state agency is initiating a program almost specifically designed to break the laws," he said.

The program builds on efforts by individual Milwaukee banks to provide mortgage loans to undocumented immigrants using Individual Tax Identification Numbers. WHEDA's involvement would expand the program to encompass more participants and make loans more affordable.

If this is going to be allowed to happen why don't we just open the borders up and let people come and go from our country as they choose? Why even bother having immigration or citizenship laws if people who get through the border illegally are just going to be treated like normal citizens anyway?

If I were an agent at the INS I'd get a subpoena for WHEDA's mortgage records and round up every alien on the books.

If these people are responsible enough to have come to this country, secured employment and ran up enough good credit to convince a bank to give them a home loan, why didn't they just enter the country legally in the first place?
