UN Sanctions Loom, Iran Keeps Enriching

Sigh...

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- The threat of sanctions has not convinced Iran to stop enriching uranium or to comply with demands that the Islamic republic prove its program is peaceful, a U.N. report said Thursday.

U.N. ambassadors are examining a six-page report from International Atomic Energy Agency Director Mohammed ElBaradei.

The report, which has received mixed reactions, came on the deadline set by the Security Council for Iran to halt its nuclear activities. . . .

Thursday's deadline calls for Iran to comply with Resolution 1696 and end its nuclear activities or face the possibility of economic sanctions. The report by the IAEA paves the way for Security Council sanctions against Tehran.

Why do you suppose Iran continues to defy the UN despite the threat of possible sanctions? Could it be because Ahmadinejad and his mullah puppet masters don't think the UN has the cojones to apply economic sanctions? Could it be because Iran doesn't feel that the UN can impose economic sanctions given Russia's contracts with the country and presence on the UN Security Council? Could it be because Iran knows that Saddam Hussein was able to get by just fine under UN sanctions for nearly 13 years?

Sure average Iraqi civilians suffered, but do you think Ahmadinejad or the mullahs care if their subjects suffer under sanctions if it means they can develop themselves a nuke?

The only way to deal with Iran is regime change. Anything less is just going to leave that country free to continue to develop nuclear weapons as well as sponsor international terrorism and jihad against the west. Just like Iraq was able to continue to harbor terrorists within its borders and sponsor terrorism against Israel even under UN sanctions.

Sadly, though, America is tied up in Iraq right now and no one else in the world seems to have the will to do what is right in Iran.
