UN Comes To Cyclone-Stricken Myanmar’s Rescue With…Condoms?

Your tax dollars hard at work:

Bangkok - The United Nations will send nearly a quarter of a million condoms into cyclone-hit Myanmar to help needy survivors with no access to contraceptives, a UN official says.

So far, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said it had sent 72 800 condoms to survivors struggling to maintain their family planning after the storm hit in early May.

A total of 218 400 condoms would be delivered, UNFPA aid advisor Chaiyos Kunanusont said.

“We don’t want regular use of contraception disrupted. An emergency usually damages the health system, so people don’t have access to condoms and contraceptives,” said Chaiyos.

Call me crazy, but I doubt that the most pressing issue facing the people of Myanmar right now is unprotected sex.

Do you think these people can afford to have children right now or do you just think they will stop having sex?

"struggling to maintain their family planning”

Lestat then jumps in, incredulous that people could ever practice self control.

I’m of two minds on this.

On the one hand, it’s pretty well documented that brushes with death have an aphrodisiac. It’s kind of a “affirmation of life in the face of death” kind of thing, and condoms can reduce the undesired consequences of this all-too-human response.

On the other hand, I wonder if this is a pre-emptive move because the UN is expecting to send in peacekeepers, and they have a well-established history of sexually mistreating those they are supposed to “help.” It’s gotten to the point where the blue helmets ought to refer to “piece-getters.”

But I think that it ought to take a slightly lower priority to things like food, water, clothing, and shelter.

Jay Tea.  The UN, in my opinion has perverted its original mission.  They have a proven history of sexual abuse of “clients”.  It is also a fact that when one is focused on survival, the body shifts to more basic needs.  Sexual intercourse not being one of them.  Good grief!

U.N. officials say the best available figures show that about 1.3 percent of Burmese adults are infected with HIV, but the actual numbers could be as high as 2.2 percent. Recent studies have found that nearly 2 percent of pregnant women are infected. The outbreak ranks among Southeast Asia’s worst, along with those in Thailand and Cambodia. But control efforts lag badly.

“The first wave of death has started,” a foreign humanitarian official said on condition he not be named for fear of government reprisal. “We are going to lose 10 percent of young people in the next 10 years.”

What an appalingly ignorant comment that completely misses the point - as usual.

The population of Burma between the ages of 15 and 64 - that would roughly coincide with the population most likely to be having sex, Lestat, is about 16.5 million.

The UN proposes to send these people a whole 300,000 condoms. That is one for every 55 people.

Even if they were to be distributed to, say, one million people, that would be one rubber for three people.

Now if we subtract out those kept/lost by the famed efficiency of the UN distribution system (sans US), it would be more like 1/10,000 - if lucky.

Now, Lestat, your assignment is:

a) In 500 words or less, explain meaningless, futile gesture designed to make the idiots who thought this up feel good about themselves and keep their phoney baloney jobs;

b) In 25 words or less, explain why, if you were a Burmese displaced by a natural disaster, and knowing that relief supplies are volume/weight constrained (you do know that shipping volume/weight is not infinite, don’t you Lestat) you would rather share a condom with dozens of your friends, than the MRE that could have been shipped in the space wasted by an average sized carton of condoms.

In your essays, your usual puffery and indignation will not be allowed to substitute for logic.

How incredibly sanctimonious and pointless the UN is!!! Perhaps 1 million people or more are refugees, homeless, without food, water, or shelter, and clearly at risk of typhus, dysentery, and a host of other threats to their immediate survival, and some world class bureaucrat with the common sense of a brick and his pluperfect idiot supporters offer up their concern and a shipment of condoms!?  Phooey!

The so-called “United Nations” ought to be closed down immediately.  It’s NYC employees, from the Secretary General on down, placed under house arrest til their assorted parking tickets are paid, and then shipped off on the first plane to Belgium, and the world body’s campus turned over to Donald Trump for redevelopment to some useful and profitable purpose.

Bat1, you want to let a guy who’s declared bankruptcy twice have that prime property?  Sorry, friend, but that’s thinking worthy of Turtle Bay!  :^)

(yes, Trump might be better than the U.N., but that’s not saying much)

Seriously, the people in Myanmar getting aid have not yet “survived” the disaster.  They are starving, dying of diseases like cholera, and so on, and are as such very often not in any condition to enjoy God’s good gift of sex.  Yes, it is horrific that the U.N. is sending condoms instead of ways to obtain clean water and food.

Even more horrific is that people are trying to deal with rampant prostitution by handing out condoms, instead of pointing out how quickly AIDS can work its way around when prostitution is accepted.  Sorry, folks, but it’s Uganda, with its “ABC” message, that has put the kibosh on AIDS, not the condom pushers.

BB,

I see your point about Trump.  But you’ll have to admit that there is a world of difference between a Chapter 11 Reorganization, and a Chapter 7 Liquidation, which is generally what the term “bankruptcy” is thought to entail.  In any case, you are right… just about any competent developer could offer a substantial improvement over that property’s current misuse.

As for the UN, it is well beyond a question of corruption, incompetence and failure.  The UN is now a detriment to the very ideals and goals for which it was founded.  Raze it and move on!

Plas,

I’ve found yet another kindred spirit here on SAB. You’ll notice that Lestat’s original comment encompasses less than 25 words; his hand and fingers quickly cramp and can no longer provide any further amusement.

Let’s hope he attempts to answer your challenge of 500 words. His recuperation could take years.

Bat,

I wish your outrage was contagious. Unfortunately many of the unwashed masses who came of age in the fifties and sixties are prone to the Ted Turner Syndrome and funding the UN is a substitute for their inability to correctly assess a situation and actually help in some meaningful way.

Thus the underlying cause and magnitude of these disasters remain misdiagnosed and are destined to be repeated. If the supporters of the UN used their monies and their influence the citizens of Myanmar would have received ample warning and much of this catastrophe would have been averted.

Sally,

Its always a pleasure to agree with you!  I can think of absolutely nothing the UN has accomplished that would justify this country’s continued membership in and financial support of that failed organization.  Nothing.

Those who think differently (is “think” really the correct word?) are self-deluded hypocrites trying to assuage their consciences with other people’s money.

Bat, my sentiments are aligned with yours my friend.

I would only add the pleasure (for myself) extends even to issues where our positions run counter; your writings are thought provoking and enlightening.

So why wouldn’t food, clothing, or shelter be a better choice than free condoms?  These are questions Lestat can’t answer.

A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

Considering its the UN we’re discussing here, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn that they paid a “bargain” price of just $19.99 apiece for Trojan factory rejects… size extra-small.
