Uh Oh: Rahm Emanuel Took Five Years Of Free Lodging Without Reportign It On His Taxes

And five years of free lodging adds up to a lot of income that Rahm apparently didn’t report or pay taxes on.

The White House chief of staff [Rahm Emanuel] said this week that he did not pay rent during the five years he bunked at the Capitol Hill home of Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn). But that raises questions whether Emanuel reported the rent-free lodging to Congress, since DeLauro is married to pollster Stan Greenberg. And will either of the parties report what could be “imputed income” to the IRS? Reps for Emanuel and DeLauro argue that House Ethics rules allow “hospitality between colleagues.”

According to Mark Hemingway at The Corner:

Both Rahm Emanuel and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (which Emanuel was formely the chairman of) are listed as clients on the website of Stan Greenberg’s polling company.

This makes six Obama cabinet appointments with ethical problems. Five of them having to do with taxes.
Richardson. Geithner. Daschle. Killefer. Solis. Now Emanuel.

    If you wish to claim he was not primarily resident in the District of Columbia, then he should have been paying HOTEL rates for the DC Area.

    So full time room rental, or Hotel rates. Pick one, he can pay taxes, interest, and penalties on whichever you choose.

    I think 2010 will be a turning point and the house will no longer be democrat controlled , isn’t it amazing how they shoot their selves in both feet. If Obama keeps up his present rate of doing the stupid things soon he will have a lower rating then Bush had. a 70 mile high stack of 1,000 dollar bills and a million dollars a day for 2,070 years wow .Is there that much ink and paper ?

    He wants to limit the salaries of CEOs to $500,000 but recently it was revealed that some Illinois school districts are paying their “CEOs”, if you will, over $400,000. Which requires more work and/or talent: Heading a multinational corporation or overseeing a solitary school district?
    If Obama is infatuated with caps, a sense of proportionality in school administrators’ pay might be in order. (They do take government money, after all!)

    that said, i feel bad for any addict. and drugged up or not, he makes valid points.

    It could happen. But, the Conservative/Republicans have to get a slate of candidates out that can repute the current day political ideology of the left.

    I love how dino and bob try to change the subject. The only time someone is able to stay at some one’s house over a long period of time for free is if their relatives or if their a charity case. For someone to be a charity case they have to be jobless, and last time I heard Rahm is and was not jobless. Oh yeah, if you want to dig up past problems that our people have had and apologized for be sure to point out the many things that your people have done and not apologized for.

    What about all the people who have to stay with friends because they lost their jobs? How about a friend with cancer who’s far from their family and needs care 24/7? Gonna start reporting them too? How about the people who their offices for lodging? Is that even legal? Give me a freakin break.

    The day any of you give up that comfy space in mom’s basement, or those cushy jobs that allow you to waste your employers money spamming message boards from the safety of your cublicles, to work 7 days a week, live under a microscope 24/7, and travel back and forth between DC and your home every week, all for a fraction of what you could be making in the private sector…. well, that’ll never happen.

    Congress is only in session four days a week when not in recess, and is recessed for considerably more than 4 weeks per calendar year.

    That’s a considerably shorter work week and a lot more vacation than most of the voting public get.

    You have no clue if you think their work ends when they get home. And by your own calculations, Emanuel did not live there full time over those five years. My points stand: it’s a seven day a week job requiring extensive travel between their home and DC that pays significantly less than what many of them have earned in the private sector, and comes with a lot more scrutiny. Sometimes it’s fair scrutiny, but sometimes it’s over the top. This entry falls into the latter category. Homeowners should be allowed to let their friends stay with them without being hassled.

    Yes.

    When one receives a service or product which is renumerable for free, it is taxable.

    Sounds to me like Mister Emanual, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, and Mister Stan Greenberg all need to be comprehensively audited by the IRS. Of course, we’d have more confidence in the outcome of those audits if the Secretary of the Treasury (for whom the IRS works) wasn’t a tax cheat himself…
