Uh Oh: Heidi Heitkamp Spending More Than Her Campaign Is Taking In
11:14am
Heidi Heitkamp says, in her Senate campaign, that she wants to change Washington DC. Judging by the way she’s managing her campaign, spending more money than she’s raising, she’ll fit right in.
When Heitkamp was trumpeting her 2nd quarter fundraising totals to the media, in advance of the figures actually being released to the FEC, she was keeping mum about her cash-on-hand figure (Berg, by contrast, told the Bismarck Tribune how much he had). It turns out there was a pretty good reason for Heitkamp keeping quiet. According to her FEC report for the 2nd quarter (see below), she spent almost $80,000 more than she took in.
This is the second straight reporting period in which Heitkamp has spent more than she’s raised. In her pre-primary FEC filing, Heitkamp reported $396,233.02 raised and spent $554,060.12. That’s $157,827.10 more than she raised.
To be fair, Heitkamp ended the 2nd quarter with almost $680,000 in cash on hand (compared to Berg’s $2.2 million), but burning more cash may be indicative of waning support for a candidate who, despite some good early polling numbers, was always a long shot in North Dakota.
In related news, don’t expect the Fargo Forum which once ran a report about how Rick Berg was fiscally irresponsible because he owed his own campaign $100,000, to report anything about this.
