Here’s a video of a union member explaining the violent actions during the Portland Longshoreman’s war that Jay W covered the other day.

Warning this video contains some potty mouth language. Rather a lot actually.

In related, local, news, some American Crystal worker wrote in to the Grand Forks Herald trying to justify why it’s ok for the local sugar worker union members to intimidate people who are willing to take jobs that the union members say they don’t want. In fact they voted NOT to take these jobs.

I don’t understand. If you voted that you didn’t want that job why would you object to someone else working?

As I have said before, to many times unions and union members are their own worst enemy. This guy exemplifies that beyond any thing I could write. Yes, this guy seems to be taking Jimmy Hoffa Jr. seriously. If you can’t kill’em, take them out by swearing them to death. Of course in the mean time this guy shows his IQ level to be that of the typical Obama supporting thug. Seeing his reaction to a simple request for someone to talk too about what was happening makes me wonder why was he so angry. Could it be that, what ever the situation, his Union was losing it and any chance that the light of that truth making the local news is a threat to them? Well thanks to this guys actions it’s gone national, so much for trying to hide behind an attempt to create fear and intimidation.

Why are you supporting a company that allows government to seize land and give the company tax breaks to start their business?

This should be the Tea Party’s worst night mare. Maybe this is a case where these workers view the South Korean and Japanese take over of their port as a threat to the American way of life, which would make the longshoremen patriots, right?

I disagree with seizing any land but that hardly gives an excuse for the union thugs to attack them and then act like this when they are asked for their side of the story.

Why are you guys spreading propaganda for a South Korean/Japanese conglomerate who got a sweet heard deal from the state, complete with government seized land and tax breaks?

Silly, the Longview Port signed a crappy contract that allowed the company to hire as they desired (which seems pretty capitalistic and American to me), and gave away tax breaks without making the deal solidly a Longview-only hiring enterprise. Now the union is behaving like terrorist thugs, but blaming the company for legally pulling a fast one. Buyer beware.

What this video doesn’t show is that the allegations against the peaceful union protesters were an outright lie:

“Union members are pleased with the outcome even though they are
smarting from false allegations of hostage-taking that were spread in
the media throughout the day, an outright lie intended to discredit the
union and its struggle for good jobs for the community,” said Leal
Sundet, Coast Committeeman for the ILWU Coast Longshore Division.

“EGT has employed a professional strike breaker and a labor
provocateur to manufacture trouble during peaceful protest, but they
can’t change the fact that longshore workers are simply wanting to go
to work and do their jobs,” Sundet said.

No reneging from what I saw, there are plenty of loopholes in the agreement that allow them to hire non-union or non-ILWU. The Port signed a bad contract (if they wanted ILWU and local expensive union construction workers instead of Oregon workers from across the river) and the ILWU should be busting down their doors if anyone deserved it. But no one does.

The reason why you don’t understand why people are upset, is because you are ignorant of the facts and because this is nothing but a partisan lie for you to run with.

Here’s the facts and reason behind the anger:

EGT Development is a joint venture of Japan-based Itochu Corp, South Korea’s STX Pan Ocean and St. Louis-based Bunge North America. Like so many corporations that promise good jobs to get what they want, EGT got a special state tax exemption and a sweetheart lease deal from the Port of Longview to build a $200 million grain terminal there. The government even seized adjacent land for the project. But as soon as the deal’s ink was dry and the ceremonial first shovel of dirt was overturned two years ago, EGT began running the project on the cheap.

Despite high unemployment in Cowlitz County and the availability of hundreds of skilled union building trades workers, EGT imported the vast majority of its construction crews from low-wage communities out-of-state and did not pay area standard wages, leading to howls from the local labor community.

After the terminal was built, EGT decided to ignore the Port of Longview’s contract with ILWU Local 21 to hire union labor on its leased site. Instead, the multinational conglomerate hired non-union
workers — claiming it would save the company $1 million a year (a figure the company later admitted had been plucked from the sky) — and EGT sued the Port, arguing it was not bound by the contract with the ILWU.

To sum up: a taxpayer-subsidized international conglomerate, which is operating on public property, is suing the public so it can avoid paying the area’s standard wages and undercut its competitors that do. Then, it exacerbated tensions with the local labor community by importing union workers from another jurisdiction to cross the picket lines.

I can certainly understand EGT not wanting to hire union thugs like your buddy in the video.

There’s no excuse for their criminal behavior and no excuse for this guys verbal attack when they were asked for an official explaination from the union.

Until an investigation uncovers something, they are just allegations. But a single statement of denial by a union rep doesn’t “prove” it to be a lie.

Six guards were detained for a couple of hours after at least 500
Longshoremen broke down gates about 4:30 a.m. and smashed windows in the
guard shack, said Longview Police Chief Jim Duscha. He called the
detained guards “hostages.”

The Longview Police Chief said it happened. The union guy said it didn’t. What a strange world we live in when something can be “proven” true and false at the same time.

There’s no victim or police report. Wednesday the police roughed up the union president and protesters. On Thursday they come up with a phony story, and no witnesses.

Since you brought up wife-beating, did you know that the victim has to file the report and name the attacker? If they don’t file a report for fear of retribution, does that mean that it didn’t happen?
I don’t know why a handful of security guards wouldn’t file a report on a group of people who have already demonstrated that they aren’t afraid of using violence……..

Yep, a “proven lie.” The guards just felt it would be safer to stay in their shack then try to exit past the rampaging thugs. They weren’t hostages. RIIIIGHT.

What lie, that EGT didn’t get a state honey of a deal?

From your own story we can see the abuse from the police delivered to the longshoremen.

In court, union attorney Robert Lavitt told Leighton the members were
reacting to an incident Wednesday in which police allegedly “roughed
up” ILWU International President Robert McEllrath in Longview.

Roy San Filippo, spokesman for the ILWU, said police pepper-sprayed
and struck Longshoremen with clubs. McEllrath was “manhandled” while
joining an effort to block a train coming into the terminal, San Filippo
said.

Union attorney Robert Lavitt told Leighton this? Then it must be true. sarc The ILWU was already violating a court order to not block the terminal. The Longshoremen went there looking for a confrontation.
