Tuition Breaks For Illegal Immigrants But Not For Soldiers

Just another day in liberal Massachusetts.

Lawmakers have slammed the classroom door shut on Massachusetts soldiers home from Iraq and seeking to go to state college, failing to cough up $8 million needed for crucial tuition waivers.
Army and Air National Guard soldiers expecting to be rewarded for their war duty under Gov. Mitt Romney’s “Welcome Home” bill found the welcome mat ripped out last week by the Legislature as it ended its formal session without approving money for the waivers.
“One of the main reasons I joined the Army was to get money to go to college,” said David Cowing, 23, of Rockland, an Iraq war veteran who is taking out at least $3,500 in loans to cover tuition for his first year at UMass-Boston because his benefits won’t kick in in time to pay the first bills.
“I went and fought in Iraq. I shouldn’t have to worry about tuition. I should be able to go wherever I want.”

Liberals love entitlements, conservatives typically don’t. But in this situation the folks to receive the entitlement, troops coming home from the war in Iraq, are actually entitled to the benefits in question by merit of their service.
Unfortunately, the liberals in Massachusetts are more interested in giving entitlements to folks who haven’t actually done a thing to earn them. Who aren’t, in fact, even citizens of this country.

Lashing out at the “wrong priorities” of lawmakers, Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey said, “The Legislature has made the appalling decision to vote on things like tuition breaks for illegal immigrants, but they couldn’t take the time to take a vote to help our Massachusetts war heroes . . . I find it deeply disturbing.”

Indeed.
But don’t you dare question these Democrats’ patriotism or their support for the troops.
Don’t. You. Dare.

The last thing the Massachusetts elitists want are college students who would question the other elitist professors in public. Especially if they have first hand, factual experience in war.

“One of the main reasons I joined the Army was to get money to go to college,” said David Cowing, 23, of Rockland

Selfishness, not self-sacrifice, as I’ve been saying for years.

Democracy is based on the assumption that people will act in their own best interest. Otherwise, what is the point of voting if it is not to select the candidate who is best for the people?

But it is highly simplistic to assume that people only act for a single reason, usually there are many reasons, even if one is dominant in our mind at a given time. Maybe the tipping point for David Cowing was the benefits. But whatever his motivation was for going to war, he is still getting shot at, and that counts for something, even if part of his motivation is self-serving.

Dave: “Selfishness, not self-sacrifice, as I’ve been saying for years.”

You have perfectly enunciated the Marxist view of self-interest. If people are free to act in their own self-interest, it will prevent the realization of the Marxist worker’s paradise, therefore it must go. Nice to hear you admit to having been a Marxist for years.

Yeah, this is all wrong. Somehow i doubt that “tuition waivers for soliders” are the same thing as “tuition breaks for illegal immigrants”. I’m not saying one is good and one is bad either — i’m saying that they aren’t even the same thing, as this story (and blog post) implies.

So Mister Cowing’s benefits (the GI Bill I presume) won’t kick in in time? Pity, I guess he’ll have to wait a year. But Bureaucratic red tape is not what this story is about — this story is about some sort of misguided sense of entitlement.

“I shouldn’t have to worry about tuition. I should be able to go wherever I want.”

Spoken like a true liberal, indeed.

I can’t wait to hear what Massachusetts’ junior Senator and make-believe war hero himself, Democrat John Kerry has to say about this.

For that matter, it will interesting to note if any Democrat at all has enough conscience or courage to criticize this bit of blatant, liberal stupidity.

Carrick: Dave’s false construct was that the only two choices are selfishness or self-sacrifice. Whether he knows it or not(and I suspect he doesn’t), that is Marxist dialectical materialism. No mention of self-interest, since Marx regarded that as greed. Our entire system is guided by self-interest, which is anathema to Marxists, and is why they want to destroy our society from within.

The story is in conflict with itself.

$3,500 in loans to cover tuition for his first year at UMass-Boston

UMass-Boston spokesman said the school will continue to honor the tuition waiver for veterans, and advocate for better benefits for soldiers.

Dave: You lie, as usual. Stick to your own comments, and don’t ever try to put words in my mouth. You lack the ability to do so.
