Try Not To Laugh: Obama Says He’ll Seek Out A “Centrist” For Supreme Court

Uh, yeah.

May 3 (Bloomberg) — President Barack Obama, weighing advice from both the left and right on his first Supreme Court choice, is likely to seek a judicial version of himself: a moderate coalition-builder.

A “moderate coalition-builder”? Did the reportesr who wrote this just copy and paste right from the Obama press release that gave them this story? Or are we actually supposed to buy this baloney?
For the record, under Obama the gap in the partisan divide is wider than under any other President in modern history. Not one Republican in the House voted for Obama’s biggest piece of legislation to date, and only three Republicans broke ranks in the Senate. One of whom is now a Democrat.
Obama’s budget just passed the House without a single Republican vote, too. And yet, he gets to label himself a “coalition builder”? Give me a break. Not only is Obama not a “moderate coalition-builder,” he’s undoubtedly lying when he claims that he’ll appoint one of those to the Supreme Court.
I expect Obama to follow through on this promise in about the same way he’s followed through on promises about accountability and responsible budgeting. He’ll say one thing, and do another. Not that a “moderate consensus-builder” should be the goal for the SCOTUS. I’d rather just have a Justice who reads what’s actually in the Constitution and then rules on it instead of twisting it with interpretation.
On a related note, what may be more offensive than Obama expecting us to swallow whole another bald-faced lie is Obama suggesting that somehow skin color should be considered in making this appointment.

In making his first imprint on the court, Obama will choose from a list of candidates who would add ethnic or gender diversity. The most discussed possibilities — federal appeals court judges Diane Wood and Sonia Sotomayor and U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan — are well-credentialed lawyers whose records suggest they would become moderate-to-liberal justices.

Right. Let’s not find the most qualified candidate. Let’s find someone based on their gender or ethnicity, as if the Supreme Court were a paint-by-numbers picture to be filled in with the appropriate colors.

Lets face it, he’s listening to his racist wife a good bit of time. I’m sure she is pushing this issue. I can hear her now, if you want me holding your hand again for a publicity stunt you better support your base of voters! That means a person of color or a woman! I bet he runs every decision by Michelle before going public with it.

    Provide some evidence.

Here you go, from The Myth of Justice Souter as a Yankee Republican:

First, consider the fact that the two Justices on the current Court who vote most frequently with each other are often Justice Souter and Justice Ginsburg. Looking at the current Supreme Court Term, for example, the Souter/Ginsburg pairing is the most common: They have fully agreed with each other 88% of the time. The next closest pairings are Scalia/Roberts at 83%, Roberts/Alito at 81%, and Thomas/Scalia at 79%.

Souter agrees more with Ginsburg than Thomas agrees with Scalia.

Somebody has to be pulling the empty suit strings.

Why should he? We need a Scalia on the left. Someone rabidly liberal.

That’s the kind of person he should choose.

  • Lioncourt

A centrist would split his vote between the left & right. Souter almost always voted with the left side of the SCOTUS.

No he didn’t. Just because you say so doesn’t make it true.

    Provide some evidence.

But after appointing Roberts and Alito I hope Obama goes to the far left. Bush went to the far right.

Conservatives are not “far right”, in that we still hold to the Constitution, the founding principles, individual independence, the four freedoms and the free enterprise economic system, none of which are “far right”.

Really, how do you feel about the 4th or 8th amendments. I don’t see you championing them very much. And neither do any other conservatives.

  • TomTom

Doesn’t matter if he appoints Elmer Fudd…It won’t change the votes..Stephens is the Pivot. When he votes with the 4 conservatives, we win. Souter was a turncoat prick that changed his votes to liberalism the minute the prick was appointed. Good Riddance!

Who cares what I say. Obama should appoint an ISLAMIST if there is one serving in the circuit court system. But, looking thro’ BIO data, I did not find a YALE,HARVARD OR STANFORD islamist attorney.Thank Lord, OH!! NO, not God again, that hurts the atheists- OK, just a person who is a citizen, even with out any big name universities,Is fine.Only restriction is reading the Constitution as it was written, put aside the personal views, but no one who writes Her or His own twist.OK, it is alright to appoint a colored person, how about Asians, kind of Tawny or Ebony.

Congress has to legislate, not the judges

Centrist – as in right between Socialist and Marxist. This president hates America. Lord help us!

  • Lioncourt

Souter was a centrist. You have moved so far right you couldn’t recognize a centrist. You are trying to purge them from your party. I hope you succeed.

I hope he nominates another Thurgood Marshall or Brennan.

Carrick: Good point! However, I think that the Supreme Court is supposed to rule on Constitutionality, not political partisanship, so political labels are meaningless, unless the Constitution is being violated by the Court.

  • robert108

Souter was a centrist. You have moved so far right…

Bullshit! Conservatives are not “far right”, in that we still hold to the Constitution, the founding principles, individual independence, the four freedoms and the free enterprise economic system, none of which are “far right”. In fact, they haven’t changed since the founding of this country, which has never been “far right”. You are either consciously lying, Hawk, or have moved so far left that you imagine anyone who doesn’t follow your ideology is “far right”. You couldn’t be more wrong.

  • robert108

Sorry! That last comment was adressed to Lioncourt. It’s hard to tell the lefties apart these days.

Somebody has to be pulling the empty suit strings.

That would be greedy hedge fund manager George Soros.

    Souter was no centrist.
