Troops Getting Upgraded Armor

WASHINGTON - For the second time since the Iraq war began, the Pentagon is replacing body armor for U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, citing a need for better protection that can withstand the strongest of attacks from insurgents, a spokesman said Saturday.

The effort, which began more than a year ago, would upgrade the protection used by more than 500,000 soldiers as well as civilian employees and news reporters. The first upgrade installed ceramic protective plates in the vests and was completed in early 2004.

Defense officials acknowledge the replacement processes have been slowed in part by debates over what is best for the troops. The current replacement is expected to take several more months to complete, said an Army official, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of information affecting troop safety.

Sounds great, right? After all, regardless of our differing views on the war in Iraq I think we all want our soldiers to be as safe as possible.

But listen to how this is being spun by The New York Times:

For the second time since the Iraq war began, the Pentagon is struggling to replace body armor that is failing to protect American troops from the most lethal attacks by insurgents.

The ceramic plates in vests worn by most personnel cannot withstand certain munitions the insurgents use. But more than a year after military officials initiated an effort to replace the armor with thicker, more resistant plates, tens of thousands of soldiers are still without the stronger protection because of a string of delays in the Pentagon's procurement system.

The effort to replace the armor began in May 2004, just months after the Pentagon finished supplying troops with the original plates - a process also plagued by delays. The officials disclosed the new armor effort Wednesday after questioning by The New York Times, and acknowledged that it would take several more months or longer to complete.

Citing security concerns, the officials declined to say exactly how many more of the stronger plates were needed, or how much armor had already been shipped to Iraq.

"We are working as fast as we can to complete it as soon as we can," Maj. Gen. Jeffrey A. Sorenson, the Army's deputy for acquisition and systems management, said Wednesday in an interview at the Pentagon.

The Pentagon is working to provide our troops with the very best armor available to keep them as safe as possible and the Times decides to twist the story into an insinuation that we are failing to protect our troops. Which is total crap, of course, but the media (always looking for an opening to stick it to the Bush administration) isn't going to let little things like "reality" get in the way of sensationalist scuttlebutt.

Its not like we spend billions of dollars each year outfitting our troops with the very best equipment available or anything. After a rigorous testing and approval process, that is, which ensures that the equipment our troops get in the field is, generally, the very best available. Something that accounts for much of the "delay" the Times article alludes to.

Maybe the Pentagon should just rush every new piece of equipment directly to the field without testing or anything. Would that make the editors of the Times happy, or would they be complaining about our soldiers getting un-tried equipment?

Update:

I wonder if anybody would like to ask this fella if his armor "failed" him?

Always glad to hear troops are getting what they need. That being said, having spent several years in US Army, they are not getting to best they can get. They are getting what the “Lowest Bidder” is willing th supply to them. If they were getting the best, they would have been issued cast ceramic full torso armor 20 years ago. Also, they would not be running around in HMMWVs instead of APCs designed for combat.

Yea, dave. I am just a big ole America-hating Democrat like you.

Dave claims that he is a libertarian minded individual which would preclude him from ever coming close to being a Democrat.  As to why he uses the Democrat talking points,...your guess is as good as mine.

We have to fall back on the wisdom of our forefathers. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and claims to be a libertarian, then it is a duck. Back to the original point. In 1984 the DoD wanted to shift R&D into bodyarmor development. They were constrained to limit this and instead focus on hightech toys. All the issues concerning stopping power versus weight versus mobility could have been settled long ago. Instead we are doing it realtime, with soldiers lives being the currency we pay for delays caused by partisan politics from the left.

You know goddamn well that if a liberal had expressed 2hotel9’s sentiments you’d question his patriotism.

Did you read the original poster’s thread?

How are what the New York Times printed (which Rob defined as “an opening to stick it to the Bush administration") and what 2hotel9 wrote factually different?

Really?  Well that is news to me.  Thanks for telling me what I would do Dave.  The next time, maybe you should stick with telling us what you would do or believe.

Asshole.

Dave, have you ever dealt with the USG? Have you ever had to depend on what they supply you? Have seen the quality of equipment issued by the USG? If the answer to any of these questions is No, you have no idea what you are talking about. By entangling your company with the government, you surrender control to them. This is what happened with bodyarmor. Several companies were working on similiar designs, composite kevlar/ceramic. Their R&D work was shelved and they were restricted from continuing on this avenue of work. One company went to court to free their R&D from the block imposed upon them. They went bankrupt fighting it. In the late 90s this R&D was released from the restrictions it had been held under. Since 1988. Why was all this done. The companies in question were all in southern, Republican controlled states, Dems on the Armed Sevices and Apropriations committees blocked the work and later the release of this R&D. And since the government had control of these very important materials, other company were restricted from using it in their work. They had to pursue other, less productive lines of research. And hence, here we are, in ‘05, way behind the curve. Now, are you up to speed.

Yep...I was right.  You’re an asshole Dave.  You can’t handle getting called to task for making an egregious remark.

Now go ahead and make some beguiling comment as if you actually have a point to make.  It is all you’ve got.

I thought I layed out a very succinct and coherent arguement. It was those other 2 doo-doo heads did it.

My mom is actually pretty good looking.  It’s kind of funny...a few times I’ve been out with her, people have asked me if she was my girlfriend or wife.  The look on their faces when I tell them that she’s my mother is priceless.  My dad and sister have had it happen a couple of times as well.  Except in that case, he gets dirty looks because they think an older guy is dating some hot chick who should be out of his league.

I’ve got fairly young looking parents.  Probably a result of them not smoking, drinking, and whatnot.  In any regard, those “your momma is so fat” and “your momma is so ugly” jokes are ghetto.
