Trent Lott Resigns

And he won’t be missed.

Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi, the Senate’s No. 2 Republican, plans to resign his seat before the end of the year, congressional and White House officials said today. Lott, 66, scheduled two news conferences in his home state later in the day to reveal his plans. According to congressional and White House officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement, Lott intends to resign effective the end of the year.

I think Lott represented a lot of what was wrong with the GOP.  He paid lip service to limited government while simultaneously voting for all sorts of unnecessary spending.  And when challenged on that by bloggers he was scornful.  He also said that talk radio was “a problem” that had to be dealt with, essentially communicating to the masses that he felt they just had too much say.

He was arrogant, and I’ll be glad to see him replaced by someone who is hopefully a little more willing to work with the people, and a little more consistent on core conservative values.
